This event brings the world’s greatest beach volleyball players and their fans together in a way that’s never been seen before, on-an-actual-beach. Sanctioned by FIV(Federation Internationale de Volleyball), the sport’s international governing body, the ASICS World Series of Beach Volleyball is the premier event in this sport. The FIVB is part of the Olympic Movement, and it represents big money to Long Beach and Long Beach’s businesses. The volleyball extravaganza will feature concerts, celebrity appearances, and, most importantly, serve as the last qualifying event before the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It is a week-long festival celebrating«all things beach,» including sports, music, culture and community. For the most part, it is free admission — droves and dozens of freebies /samples /tastings /photo opps — but quick-to fill free seating, especially over the weekend. Bottled water is allowed in and that’s all, otherwise the options are limited to beer(Bud Lite & spray tatts of Bud-Lite if you prefer?) and fast-prepared foods, think burgers, burritos, and blah. Alfredo’s, just outside general admission, seemed to be doing well. No food trucks were on the premises. The crowd is beautiful. That is the players and most of the attendees, bikini clad girls and shirtless boys, and, arrgh, the many large families taking-a day-cation, as it is mostly free, and many snack in their nearby parked autos. Carry water. Wear & carry sun screen. And definitely wear sunglasses & snap some pictures. NBC will telecast the event for 14 hours live, on Saturday, August 22 and Sunday, August 23. According to a release sent by the AWSOBV, the competition will be broadcast globally in more than 120 countries, including other coverage on NBCSN and the Universal Sports Network.
