CLARIFICATION: Formerly a Seafood Market, this space has recently been converted into a bakery, but still bares the Manila Trading sign outside, very deceiving. Hopefully they will have a new sign up soon. The bakery is called Luisa and Sons Bakery. Good Morning Unilocalers! After a long hiatus I am back, compelled to write after indulging in what I have found to be THEBEST cheese roll ever invented. Move over Porto’s because this bad boy is taking over! The first thing you will notice is the soft, airy, flaky crust with sugar crystals on top. After taking a bite, hidden in the center, is a smooth, sweet, cream cheese filling perfectly camouflaged. I can tell you that the experience will blow your mind. Being very selective with my pastries, I can tell you that extravagant looking $ 5 cupcakes and overrated luxe backed goods are nothing compared to the 3 for $ 2 steal you will get here. I feel almost guilty for purchasing these cheese rolls at this price. The Filipino bakery is located on the Westside of Long Beach. You will find pandesal, leche flan, egg custard pies, and the many other goodies, which I haven’t had the pleasure of sampling yet. At the moment, I’ll stick to the cheese rolls. Update: I don’t know what it is with Filipino places(I can talk crap I’m Filipino). They start off really well and then start falling off the deep end. The cheese rolls are now smaller and the they are no longer kept warm. The empanadas are gross and they serve stale bread. I mean it’s a bakery! You don’t sell stuff that’s days old! HELLO we can tell! So, so, so disappointed!

This place always conjures images of Blue Crab. 1st being freaked out as a child when they were the first place to offer live fresh blue crab. They would have huge cardboard boxes on the ground in front of the fish case. Bushels of crab overflowing from the boxes. Enough for a brave crab to often jump out and try escaping from the tonged grips of your Nanay. and perhaps just miss your exposed toe from the tsinelas you wore that morning. This is also where I learned to tell how to pick live blue crabs to yield the best: Egg or Tamale Female vs. Male Density vs. Weight over Surface area. They were one of the first Asian seafood markets on the Westside that offers you buy we fry. They great selections of seafood still — compared to Tambuli across the parking Lot.(Not compared to original Tambuli that actually started You Buy We Fry). Convenient especially if you are picking up catering next door from Tita Susan’s for parties too! They sell a bigger selection of imported Filipino beauty products as well.(you know Tita needs her Tawas). LOL Excellent selection of rice too. Don’t be tempted to park on the curb like a lot of people tempt you to do, because every once in a while they do ticket you. What can I say, it’s the WESTSIDE
