Lowell Lake is a great place to enjoy some of the beautiful scenery this area of Vermont has to offer. We first came here last year on a recommendation from our hotel just a few minutes away. At the time, it was too cold to stay very long, so we just picnicked and left. We came back again this year with a group of our friends, and it made for a lovely day trip. The hike around the lake was light and scenic, and we found some fun spots along the way. At the end of the loop, there was a neat little cemetery with faded old gravestones we were able to explore. Parking was easy, with a number of spots at the entrance. The picnic areas were clean and well kept with quite a few tables, and there was a launch area for canoes and kayaks.

My family has been coming here for kayaking and light hiking for more than a decade. Lowell Lake State Park is a total gem for families, outdoor enthusiasts, and beginner hikers. The lake has a great kayak/canoe launch and has lots of nooks and crannies to explore. No motored boats. Some abandoned buildings from old camps and lots of marshy wildlife(birds, small critters, and in early evening, I’m sure moose, too!) The hiking loop around the lake is pristinely kept and is an easy, flat, 3.5 miles. Trail highlights include scenic views of the lake and wetlands and a Revolutionary War era cemetery. VERY well marked with blue trail blazes. Parking for the trail is available at the parking area located near the boat landing off Lowell Lake Road. Great picnic area with tables and grassy knolls to lay a blanket. The park has its own ranger/caretaker who lives in the park and does a great job of making rounds, fielding questions, maintaining the trail, and answering questions about the wildlife. My favorite time to kayak at Lowell Lake is in the fall to appreciate the foliage of the surrounding mountains. Amazing! In the winter the hiking trails morph into snowmobile trails. And I suppose the lake is a possibility for ice skating. What would make it a 5? Bathroom facilities & a section manicured for swimming(scraping slimy pond plants from bottom, making small beach).
