It’s spring in Syracuse! And that means, despite the 45 degree weather, I’m looking for any excuse to get outside and soak up some sunshine. My buddy and I found a good excuse in the Clay Central Park disc golf course. It offered a variety of enjoyable play, with only minor navigation and mud issues. The course meanders over nearly the entire perimeter of the park and offers a variety of holes. We played over long fairways, and through tight, forested trails. The tees are well maintained concrete starting strips, with clear course signage. It’s early in the season, so many parts of the course were muddy and wet. Also, there wasn’t clear signage from the hole/basket to the next tee. We got ourselves lost a few times(and played one hole out of order once). Overall, I had a lot of fun trying disc golf for the first time! And this course was a great way to do it.

I really enjoyed this course. I’ve always driven past and sometimes see people playing hole 12 or 18, but I finally was able to play myself. I had no idea there were a full 18 holes on this course! Somehow this course should be advertised better, after all it’s FREE! A couple of notes: Hole 3 is the bucket on the left, NOT the bucket on the right(that’s hole 5). After hole 14 go LEFT, the hole just to the right is hole 6(in case you’re playing out of order, I liked starting on 12). Holes 17 and 18 will be painful if you don’t have disc golf frisbees(ultimate frisbees are far too light and you’ll have so many tosses on these last two holes that you’ll lose count. I LOVED the holes in the woods! When I thought of disc golf I just imaged opened field holes, but the woods were a great surprise and I liked that better due to strategy and recovery. We went in early April and there was a TON of mud everywhere. Not a major deterrent, but don’t wear good shoes or pants. I think this course could be improved a bit by adding more walkways made from wood or at least something to get over the mud after it rains. I will definitely be going back here a lot, I really enjoyed the experience.
