The owner, Paul and his staff are very professional and knowledgeable about diving. He has a well stocked shop and sells many excellent brands at very fair prices. You can get used equipment in good condition for great deals also. He is very generous with his pool, even allowing customer like myself to use it even though I have never taken a class with him. I met Paul because I have a business just down the street from him. If the shop was closer to my home, I would definitely enjoy taking some classes as they are competitively priced and taught by well seasoned instructors. There is tons of diving you can do in Michigan and even if you just want to stick to warm water destinations, getting classroom and certification dives out of the way at home makes a lot more sense. If you are at all interested in SCUBA diving and live in the downriver area, you need to try out Scuba Centers of Michigan.

Getting scuba certified in Michigan makes as much sense as buying snowboarding gear in Arizona. Because customer interest and volume is low, they will nickel and dime you on everything. Except instead of nickels and dimes, it is 50s and hundeds(hundeds). You want to show up for class? You are going to need to buy fins, a mask and a snorkel tube. You want to get certified(so you can scuba outside of their pool)? You will have to pay to rent all the scuba equipment. Did you get stuck in traffic or at work and you will be 15 minutes or more late? Yes, there is a fee for that. Even with a Groupon, I ended up paying about twice what I have seen at the handful of dive sights i have been to. During the summer peak season(when the water temperatures outside are bearable), instructor availability is severely limited because they are off running dive trips. I imagine that is more lucrative and fun for them. They do not run lessons during the colder months. On the plus side, they do have a heated pool on site and you can practice as often as you like as long as there is someone staffing the shop. That is super useful and handy to get comfortable with new skills and equipment. The instructors are generally super chill and have heaps of dive experience. Their shop has everything you could possibly need and are more than willing to take your money for it. I really wish, I had taken care of this when I had the free time in Australia. I am a moron for getting scuba certified in Michigan.
