I recently signed my daughter up for trombone lessons at A&R. We showed up for the lesson and were informed that the instructor was out of town for 6 weeks. Upon further investigation, they realized that whoever we had talked to on the phone had scheduled the lesson in the wrong month. Ok, mistakes happen. They called a backup instructor and we scheduled with him for the following week. As we were about to leave, we were informed that the backup charges $ 4 more per lesson. Ok, a little peeved but we’ll give him a shot. The next week we showed up for the lesson, but the instructor didn’t. That was the final straw. They did offer to give us a free lesson, but why in the world would we actually go back? The whole reason we decided on A&R is because of their reputation and price. We immediately went to Marshall Music. They booked our lesson AND it ended up being cheaper than A&R. I’m done with A&R and won’t give them any business, ever.

This place has been open since the dawn of the dinosaurs. They know what you need.(even if you don’t) and are quite knowledgeable. I rented my first instrument with them. They work with most of the local schools and are so friendly. They sell everything from orchestra instruments to rock bank equipment. If you are a musician then this is the place for you. I only knocked off one star for parking :)

Great old school Music store. The music business has undergone a big box store transformation much like the hardware business. Guitar Center dominates new instrument sales, and smaller operations like A & R need to be there to provide service, lessons and repairs for those new buyers. The real advantage that A & R has is the terrific instructional and technical staff. My daughter has taken Tenor Sax and Guitar lessons there for several years. I cannot say enough good about Mike(Guitar), Terry(Sax), and Elane(Sax). Also, Timmy the instrument repair god is fast and cheap, and is really accommodating for emergency repairs. A & R is one of the very best of Downriver.
