First, a quick correction: the name of this place is North Main Street Mexican and American Grocery and Deli. But the only word you need to retain from that clunky title is MEXICAN. My friend and I were camping in the next town and on Saturday were in search of something breakfasty around noon, knowing better this far north of NYC than to even utter the word brunch. We got a halfhearted recommendation for the Liberty Diner, but fortunately decided to check out Liberty’s old-fashioned downtown first. We took a gamble on a Mexican eatery where we saw Mexican patrons instead of the diner, and this turned out to be an example of what they call winning. Not in the Charlie Sheen sense but in the sense of actually winning. They were done serving breakfast, so my friend got pollo guisado(chicken stew), and I got enchiladas rojas. Our meals were better than we’d dared hope.(Granted, expectations for food in this area were not too high – someone directed us to that diner by saying«all the restaurants» were near it– McDonald’s, Taco Bell, etc.) They were served with refried beans and rice topped with avocado slices drizzled with with zigzags of crema fresca. My enchiladas were made with queso blanco and had just enough heat. My friend’s stew was fantastic, tender chicken with perfect little potato orbs and a spicy broth. It was not at all the pre-shredded American cheese sadness that sometimes passes for Mexican food. It was cheap, unpretentious, super satisfying food. We knew we would not get so lucky in this area again, so we went back the next day. My friend ordered the same dish. This time I asked nicely for the breakfasty item chilaquiles. Success! It was so satisfying that I’ve thought about this place approximately once an hour since eating there yesterday. Then the owner came out to talk our ears off for about 20 minutes(as people tend to do in that part of the state) until business called him back to the register, but not before he dropped the good news that they might open another restaurant in another town not too far away. Fingers crossed. I’ll be back!
