A belfry is a bell tower. It’s usually attached to a church or some other structure. This one happens to be old. While not quite as old as the original belfry(destroyed in 1909), the reproduction of the Old Belfry stands tall on Belfry Hill and overlooks Lexington. It’s well worth the two minute climb for the view and to contemplate the importance of the original in its defining role in American history. For this is the belfry that alarmed the local men that the British regulars were on their way. It’s the text messaging/twitter/facebook of colonial america. The belfry was not at the current location that fateful day in 1775 but was rather on the Battle Green. All of which you can learn during a walk through the immediate area where the first birth pangs of American independence came about.

Hike? Hardly. Get out of your bus tour seat and get some exercise! Pretty authentic, yet reproduction of original Belfry. Once you get to to top, depending on the season, you can look out over Lexington Center.

This structure houses the bell that summoned the militia to Lexington Green. It’s quite a trek to get up the hill. It would say it’s more like a hike than anything else since it’s rocky. Just a few meters up. I certainly wasn’t wearing the correct foot apparel just to check this out. Once I got up there, I was quite disappointed. I can sure see the structure; but the bell? Definitely a historical monument not worth going to.
