Established on Jan. 11th of 1830, La Grange was the first college in the State of Alabama, opening as an all-male school of higher learning. The college became a military school in the 1850’s and was called ‘The West Point of The South’. Both Confederate and Union Forces occupied the mountain-top site and the Federals burnt the two three-story brick buildings down on April 28, 1863. There’s only a historical marker and what looks like a stone block from the original foundation at the site. There are several log cabins, a general store, slave kitchen(under construction) and the Bonner cabin, built in 1880. What is really cool is the Antebellum Cemetery located up a gravel road with graves going back as far as 1820. There are Confederate graves, whole families and veterans of WWI and II interred here. My friends and I came up here last night for a ghost hunt and I captured two eerie orbs of lights. Definitely a fun place to go with the family, the General Store wasn’t open when I took my mom there today nor were any of the other buildings but there’s picnic benches and a sweeping panorama of the valley below.
