I was recently lucky enough to join the wonderful Loudoun YMCA Family. The staff is great and very helpful. There is a schedule that is followed to ensure the children are getting their homework done, building friendships, and participating in games and sports. The children I’ve worked with so far are very welcoming and eager to help their classmates. It’s great to see an after school profpgram that allows the children to grow. I can’t wait for summer camp!

This is a review of the YMCA summer camps offered in Leesburg. Last year, my children attended several weeks of summer day camp offered by YMCA, including the«traditional» summer camp and the«outdoor nature» camp. This week they could only attend one week, and chose the outdoor nature camp. The traditional summer camp has theme weeks and is held at a school. My son attended mostly these in the summer of 2012. There were lots of kids, he made many new friends and saw some existing friends. They played lots of games, inside and out, and he learned about different topics. He even choose to participate in the talent show and he and his friends worked out a break dance routine which was better than I had anticipated given that they were all 6. The Outdoor Nature Camp rocks. They do pick up and drop off in Leesburg, but the camp is in Middleburg. Since we live in Leesburg I loved this arrangement. The kids were outside most of the time, they canoe, kayak, swim –in a pool(last year they swam every day, this year it was only 2x a week and the weather didn’t cooperate for that so it was a bit of a bummer). They did archery and generally played like most of us used to… climbing trees, catching frogs. I was so thrilled to have my kids participating in these activities instead of learning how to be the best tap dancer, or whatever. This year my daughter was old enough(10) to get to do the zip wire and it was the highlight of the week for her. The downer is that if it is raining, it’s not great to be outside. They would take shelter in a cabin, but the kids complain it was small. The counselors had a plan to entertain them with games and stories, but it really doesn’t compare to the thrill of tree climbing. This year, it only rained one day, and they actually stayed at the school that day. Probably a good choice. I am sure we’ll be back next year.
