I think I found this place after doing a search for attractions along Hwy 99. Apparently I was expecting something more because I came away a bit disappointed. I try to support family farms and whatnot, but this was just a small store 3 miles out of the way. Get more than one couple in the store and it gets crowded pretty quick. They do have samples out, and provided another sample upon request(we were considering the Smoked Almonds but that sample wasn’t readily available). I think we must’ve arrived at the end of the day– the employees weren’t very chipper. They do have a good collection of nuts and gift baskets.

Located in the middle of nowhere(about 5 – 10 minutes east of 99), Buchanan Hollow Nut Company has a good product but it’s not really worth the detour. The nuts are tasty and free samples are available. Almonds are available in raw, unsalted, salted, and smoked form($ 7 for a 1lb. bag). I really liked the smoked almonds which taste like they’ve actually been in a smoker rather than being doused with smoke flavor. The small shop has a hodgepodge of nuts, tchotchkes, and country clutter décor. It’s not very pretty but for those of you who are trying to buy local and stay away from large corporate markets, Buchanan Hollow could be of interest.

I have been a customer for over 30 years and love their nuts. I don’t have to wrap the 1lb package because it looks good as it is. The pistachios are crispy, none are burnt and all are opened. I ate a burnt pistachio from another vendor, cheaper, and could not get that burnt taste out of my mouth!!! Love the almonds and brittle also.

My mom had ordered from this company several times in the past, but will never order from this company again, as per their request. I have never heard of a company asking a customer to not use them. My mom made a mistake on her order, they also made a mistake in her order. When my mom called to do an exchange the person she spoke to was very rude, claiming she is trying to scam the company. Trust me, my mom has better things to do than scam a nut company. I called back to speak to this person and heard first hand how rude he was. This is no way to handle a customer whether they are right or wrong. If they didn’t get the memo, the customer is always right. I then sent an email to the owner, later on she called back. No apology for what happened, however she did offer to send a pound of pecans(the item they got wrong) and we don’t have to return anything. That is the only reason I’m giving the second star. However her customer service wasn’t the greatest either, saying my mom always uses old catalog numbers. I said maybe they should send catalogs more often, she says she can’t do that because it costs her $ 1.50 and it already costs too much to run the business anyway. She continued to rush me off the phone, and reiterated the previous person for us to not order from their company again. They can rest assure that we will never order from them again.

The shop sells pistachios and almonds, the former certified organic.(Their almonds are no longer organic.) Also walnuts, cashews, and an assortment of dried CA fruit, jams, things-in-chocolate, crappy housewares, etc. Free samples of various nuts were available and the owner brought out several more types to sample by request. The owner was sweet and talkative and somewhat less than politically correct.

They have the freshest nuts and the best prices here. I always stop and buy nut brittle for Christmas gifts.
