I moved here from New York City. No one can replace my ten years hairdresser from Washington Heights. I met several hairdressers in Jamaica Plains, Rosedaline, and other area. I tried their blowdrying skills. They were not that good. I heard it through someone that Alva from Mi Salon and I did. She was good.

I’m a transplant to Mass. from Atlanta, GA. I don’t know anything about the state or about Lawrence, the city I now live in. I wandered into Mi Salon because I was taking a walk in the neighborhood and they were close to where I lived. After I figured out who the proprietress was, I felt like I would be in excellent hands. Her beautiful long hair was styled perfectly straight, just the way I like my own. I have special needs: I am allergic to most hair dyes. My Atlanta hairdresser worked ceaselessly with me to find products that wouldn’t burn my scalp. He eventually found a semi-permanent product that worked very well, and before I moved up North, I took a large supply of it with me because it’s an obscure brand and there was a good chance most salons would not carry it. So, I walked into Mi salon and explained my situation to the owner, Alva. She understood and didn’t mind in the least that I’d be bringing my own dye. We set a date. When I showed up, her assistant was there. She didn’t speak English too well and I didn’t speak Spanish at all, but we got by with a few words and a lot of pointing(smile). She read the instructions on the product and called Alva to discuss it. Then she proceeded to color my gray roots and(at my request), my eyebrows. She listened to me when I told her it needed several washings to get the dye off(even this brand burns and hurts just a little). She did so, and by the time that was finished Alva came in and did a spectacular job at styling my very thick, naturally curly and frizzy hair just the way I like it: ramrod straight, flat, and thin as cornsilk. :-)(Yes, I know it is not really that thin, but a good stylist knows how to create that illusion.) Alva also waxed and trimmed my eyebrows. Again, I was impressed with the result. She created a beautiful arch. The blowout was gorgeous and lasted a surprisingly long time. I just needed to spray a little product on it a couple of times a week to keep it straight and flat. Best of all, the prices were very reasonable compared to what I used to pay in Atlanta at my fashionable and highly popular Buckhead salon. Great service/interesting people and lively salon(always something going on there)/wonderful looking hair. What more could I want? Yes, there was a slight language barrier but I was extremely impressed by their professionalism and ability to overcome the communication problem. If you’re looking for a Lawrence hairdresser, I strongly recommend Mi Salon, in downtown Lawrence on Essex Street, close to Washington Mills.
