It’s about time a sushi restaurant in the DC/Baltimore Metro area rises to the occasion! After having tried sushi restaurant after sushi restaurant over the last 7 years of living in Maryland, we have FINALLY found one that stands up to my west coast sushi expectations! The fish tastes fresh and the rolls are good size! Four of us ventured out on a Friday evening with a Living Social deal and ate our hearts out. We ordered so many rolls, that they came out beautifully displayed on a big boat! My daughter thought it was the coolest thing ever. My favorite roll was the sunset roll and my husband loved one of the specialty spicy rolls. This restaurant is great because you have three options: 1. Hibachi style – Sit around the table and let the show begin! 2. Sushi Bar – Watch the art in action 3. Dining room – Enjoy the dishes and the company of your table We made a reservation for 6p on a Friday night and upon arriving the restaurant was still rather quiet. Our rolls were made very quickly. By the time we finished and ordered more, service had picked up, but our second order still came out quickly. Great all around, can’t wait to go back!!!

The décor has improved somewhat from the previous Chili’s tenant, but not much else. The menu is americanized Japanese fares. The appetizers are forgetful. I had some softshell crab that was overly fried. The salmon entrée was also overcooked and drowned in sauce. I would hazard a guess that was what made it even palatable. The only redeeming fares are the sushi which is reasonably decent. The service is spotty. The server disappears for long periods without checking up on us.

I’m almost tempted not to Unilocal this place in the spirit of keeping it Laurel’s «little secret.» But that’s ridiculous in the Internet age, and the other night when we ate there it was so quiet I was a little bit worried — they need the business. The sushi here is really, really good, and the presentations will blow you away. It seems that the trend in sushi is getting away from focusing on just the raw fish, with lots of sauces and frills added on to the plate. But this stuff tastes awesome, so I don’t mind. The atmosphere here says elegant, fine dining, but the vibe is casual and friendly(especially when I’m there lol) and the prices are reasonable. The only thing to be careful about is the service — it’s friendly and efficient, but some of the servers seem not to have perfect English, so you have to be sure they understand your order. But if you have a problem, it should be easily resolved — the management here is very attentive. I’ve got to agree with the guy who said that for Laurel, this is Michelin star territory.

This review is for the sushi only, didn’t get to try the hibachi. The sushi was pretty good and decent quality, but very pricy for the amount that you get. We got the Salmon Servich & Ganbei Garden apps — the salmon was skimpy and the dish didn’t have much taste. but the Ganbei Garden was the star of the night. The clam sushi that my friend got was gigantic, but the rest of the rolls were really small, especially for the prices they charged($ 8-$ 15)! I think there are other places to get sushi at good value, but it wasn’t a bad place — good place to impress your date with pretty looking sushi. ;)
