Please please get off 19 to see this! It’s a short ride down to a very pretty park. The black lava formations and the incredible big strong waves make you speechless… You can’t swim here. Too dangerous. We saw a guy with a selfie stick walk clearly way too far in and almost get wiped out. But that’s what you get for being selfie obsessed. Tip: Great spot to bring a picnic lunch. It would be great for a group. Bathrooms on site.

The road down is a twisty and steep. There are several houses lined on the way down. There is ample parking. A very clean bathroom. And the AMAZING view.

This is a nice place to visit and take great pictures but it also has a tragic past too. When you take a look around and see how close the mountain is and a small pocket of land the school was on and how close the ocean is, everyone had no chance when the tsunami that hit this place. This is one hairy boat ramp too. I’ve been here and seen a boat come in when its rough and it was obviouse it was not his first time. If your not experienced bringing your boat in here, you shouldn’t have launched it in the first place. Good place to boogie board too. Nobody was out today because the boat ramp was closed. Its a nice drive coming down to this place. The road is narrow too so don’t speed and respect the neighborhood here.

We followed some road mark and landed at this park. There’re some people looked like they’re staying at this park. Good bathroom. Beautiful view with strong waves. Didn’t know about the tsunami. Good place to take pictures.

Nice stop on the way to the volcano. A bit hidden but we had a great app guide for the big island. Beautiful views from the park, but beware… respect the ocean waves here. If you are not local, don’t even think about swimming at this spot. We took pictures on top of the giant concrete objects but that’s the closest we got to the water. It’s very dangerous as the historical news clippings about the tragic deaths and the memorials will warn you. Saw a basketball court here. Public bathrooms too.

Wow, June — thanks for the review… had no idea about the tsunami. This park was a total random find as my husband and my cousin and her boyfriend were just driving around trying to find scenic spots to take pictures. We turned off and found this gem of a park! I’m not quite sure where in the park we landed but we just kept veering to the right near the boat landing towards huge concrete structures shaped like toy jacks. After learning about the tsunami, it all makes much more sense. The winds were pretty fierce and the surf was pretty insane so as June said, you couldn’t swim but the waves make for some pretty amazing pictures. Inside the park there are plenty of grassy areas for you to play and eat with your family and just enjoy the weather. I’d definitely come back to just chill and hangout.

Laupahoehoe holds a tragic past. A tsunami on April Fool’s Day in 1946 killed 24 people. The names and ages of the victims were engraved on a rock, which serves as a memorial in the park. The village was later relocated further inland to avoid another tragedy. The park has beautiful views of the ocean but the waves make it dangerous to swim here. Nice picture taking and for a picnic but that’s about it.
