I’ve only tried a slice of cake from Desir Bakery, so this review is purely on just that. My landlord’s birthday was yesterday and she invited me to have some cake. The cake itself was okay. Not as fluffy and moist and fresh tasting like from really good Asian bakeries but passable. There was a LOT of cream. When I removed the globs of cream caked on(hah no pun intended), there was very little cake remaining. Again, that’s atypical of legit Asian bakeries. The frosting should be there to accentuate the cake, not to make it bigger. Next, the fruit was nothing to get excited over; they’re not fresh and they lack the glossy shine of a jam or jelly finish often used to make the cakes more appealing. So on a related note, the presentation isn’t anything spectacular either. Usually Asian bakeries decorate their cakes with lots of finesse. But these cakes look like a small step up from the regular mass produced cakes you can buy at Albertsons or Vons. But considering the prices here aren’t that bad, you get what you pay for. I’m not saying Desir Bakery is terrible. I would try other non-cake items from here. But if you’re planning to get a beautiful and delicious birthday cake for someone you care about, there are better choices, and I personally wouldn’t come here for it.

I love the lightness of cakes from all parts of Asia. So, naturally grabbed a slice of pandan and saw that there was a special posted — buy a slice and get coffee at a discount — yum. Well, the gal at the counter was confused at my request for the coffee and cake combo, but we worked it out. I prep my coffee and have a seat in their dining area and… wow, the coffee had a richness that I was not ready for; so happy! The cake which is good on its own, was taken to new heights accompanied by that strangely delicious cup of joe.

58CENTSFORREALDARKSMOOTHCOFFEE Besides the wonderful cup of coffee, the pastries especially those with taro and baked goods are superb. Of course the PETs are great too.(PETs~Portuguese Egg Tarts) You’ll find Desir Bakery inside of the 168 Market. Tables to the left of the cash register are for deli and Desir Bakery customers. If you wish to drink sodas or water you can pick them up and pay for them at the deli counter.

i absolutely love the fact that 168 market has a bakery inside. you can get all your asian grocery necessities plus a lil treat for yourself or your sweetie on your way out. or, better yet, grab something before you start shopping and grub away while filling your cart. desir bakery has all the essential chinese bakery items. from little egg custard tarts to big party cakes, everything is quite tasty. service is slightly lacking. for example, i purchased a birthday cake for a friend and they refused to write happy birthday on it for me. instead, the girl, and i say girl because she couldn’t have been older than 15, told me that she’d give me a piping bag and i could do it myself. how weird is that?! i declined as i have a pretty good feeling that i can’t pipe for sh**!!! a baker, i am not. the cake was a hit with the homies, though and the birthday boy loved it! writing or not, the cake itself was super moist and fluffy with the perfect amount of sweet. fresh strawberries and peaches on top and fruit in the middle of the cake. yum! oh, i can’t forget to mention the prices. all of the baked goods are around $ 1 a piece. so, pretty easy on the pocketbook. =o)
