I know, I know. 4 stars for a Danny’s Sub Shop in New Carrollton? What am I thinking? It’s all about the mumbo sauce people. Well, here’s the breakdown. When I moved to College Park back in the mid-90s, I was working my first full-time job since college, and knew *nothing* about living in DC. This Danny’s Sub Shop happened to be a semi-convenient lunch stop along the way. This is all relevant because Danny’s introduced me to… drum roll… Mumbo Sauce! For a shade over 5 bucks, you can order up fried chicken wings, a side of fries and an orange soda.(I think it might be a Lunch Special… I don’t even look at the menu. I just order it.) And then — ask them to pour the mumbo sauce over your wings. No it’s not on the menu! Just ask for it! They’ll know what you want. The wings are big, meaty wings, and the fries are awesome. Mumbo Sauce? It’s a DC tradition, folks. I’m not quite sure what it is. There’s a bit of a debate about it, which is prolonged because each carryout location I’ve tried it at has a slightly different flavor. What I can tell you is that it’s probably some bizarre Ketchup concoction, and I’ve *never* had a good batch in VA. Gotta roll to PG County to get the good stuff. Damn, I love it. Oh! Some folks prefer fried rice to the french fries. This way, one can swirl the rice in the copious Mumbo leftovers at the bottom of your greasy styrofoam take-out container. Personally, I just dip my fries in it and lick it off my fingers(sluuurp), but either way the locals will spot you as someone who knows the deal. 4 stars — Don’t come here for service. Don’t come here for ambience. Don’t come here and expect a clean bathroom. It’s the Chicken and Mumbo Sauce. It’s so cheap for lunch, and it is so good! Worth the drive around the beltway? It is for me — goodness knows there’s absolutely nothing else along that stretch of road that does anything for me. Oh! Except there is a drive-in liquor store right next door, if you’re into that scene. Happy Dining!
