Driving through and needed a place to eat lunch. Found El Charros on maps and gave it a try. It was great food. The service was very good as well. The prices are reasonable, too. We will make it a point to come here again. My husband had the shrimp nachos and I had the chicken with grilled broccoli, cauliflower, onions and peppers. They accommodated my food allergies too.

Driving through Missouri and decided to try something more«local» just of I-49 in Lamar. This place doesn’t look like much from the outside and, in fact, we almost didn’t go in but it is much more inviting inside and we were happy we stayed. This is a family run place and the service was quick and friendly. The shrimp taco salad was excellent and fresh and the Yoyas special was nice with just a bit of jalapeño in the guac(which I like). The beans are traditional with lard and very tasty. The kids like the beef burritos but to me the totillas with the white cheese sauce were a bit too gooey and could have used a bit more«cooking.» In the end, we were all very happy we stopped in and would definitely stop in again if we were in the area especially since the food would go even better with a few beers at dinner time ;-)

Salsa was fresh and tasty, service was EXCEPTIONAL! We each enjoyed our meals, which included fish tacos, beef burrito, shrimp in cheese sauce, pork tamale, and Chicken enchilada. Sodas and water tasted perfect, beans were above average, rice was average. Hot sauce had a nice slow burn. If we’re passing through Lamar in the future we’d definitely eat here again. Happy to find a choice other than the chain fast food places.

Skip it. I ordered heuvos rancheros and received a plate with two over cooked fried eggs covered in red sauce next to runny refried beans and a scoop of rice. Seriously? I should have sent it back. I dislike dropping a negative review since obviously this is a family owned place but if you’re going to run a restaurant you need to make more effort than that.

If you are looking for a place to eat in Lamar on Unilocal, you are either lost, stranded or visiting Presidential birthplaces in the US. Lamar is the birthplace of President Truman. Outside of the landmark, this town of about 4,000 has one of the best Mexican restaurants in the Midwest. El Charro(The Cowboy) has great platters(my fav is the shrimp, chicken and beef with rice and beans), burritos and fresh chips. Service is pretty good and food comes out of the kitchen pretty fast. I spent about a 10 months in the area on business and this was my 2x week lunch place.

This is my favorite place in Lamar. There are several El Charro restaurants in the area including Joplin and Pittsburgh and they are about the same. The food is good and it is not expensive. You get seated and served very quickly and everyone there does a good job. The food is consistent and I have never been disappointed.
