Review a whole town? Why not, there’s not a lot up here to review, and this was the only place I could get checked into via Unilocal when we went up camping this past summer. Piseco is a charming little almost-town, with a post-office that’s barely open, a tiny one-strip airport(!), a community hall with a couple of historical displays(open Saturdays and Sundays in the afternoon, in-season) on the north side of the lake, and a whole lot of quiet going on. There’s no «center» to it so much as an «around», around Piseco Lake and Oxbow Lake to its north and Spy Lake to the east. The north and east sides of the lake are dominated by private homes, including cottage communities, so the public swimming options are limited. There are three state campgrounds on the west side, one with a tiny swimming beach(Poplar Point), where you can get very close to the lake(and your neighbors if the campground is full). The proximity to Panther Mountain(one of the few southern mountain hikes where you can get a view) and several five-star trails makes this a pretty reasonable jumping off point for the milder non-high-peak country. The lake has its share of power boats and jet skis that disturb the tranquility a bit, but it’s wild enough the loons will keep you awake at night. There’s no stores to speak of, save for«Casey’s Corner»(with an attached liquor store) at the intersection of 8 and Old Piseco at the very north end of town, which is an overpriced and rather dim convenience appropriate for beer and ice and not much more. A couple of the inns along the west side allegedly serve meals but we couldn’t find anything open in mid-August during the week; you have to drive 10 miles into Speculator to find«services» or civilized respite of any sort, but that is a feature in our book, not a bug.
