Lake Placid

We first visited Lake Placid a couple years ago when I ran a half marathon there. We’ve been back a few times since and fell in love with the area a little bit more each time. The natural beauty, small town feel, delicious restaurants, Olympic history, hiking, and lake activities are just some of the things that made us choose Lake Placid for our recent wedding celebration! It has something for everyone; hiking (46 adirondack peaks – which to choose?), water sports (motorized on Lake Placid itself, non motorized on Mirror Lake), shopping (both chain outlets-​Gap/​Van Heusen and local mom and pop shops), races (Ironman and Marathon weekends bring in huge crowds each year), a restaurant for every pallet, skiing at nearby Whiteface Mountain (along with snowmobiling and cross country skiing just outside of town), beautiful fall foliage, a brewery and two wineries right in town, and Olympic venues/​museums/​history that any sports fan will appreciate! Sure, it’s a bit of a hike to get there, but I promise that you won’t be disappointed if you do!

Lake Placid and the surrounding Adirondacks is my favorite vacation spot in the northeast United States, barring Acadia in Maine. It really is just an amazing gem, particularly if you love the outdoors and communing with nature, regardless of your age.
The town gained popularity as a tourist destination in the late 1800s when locals began hosting snow and ice games in the winter and then the early 1900s when the «Great Camps» started with the Robber Barons in the Teddy Roosevelt era. Host to the 1932 and 1980 Winter Olympics, the town is aching to hold the games again — the venues are all still tourist attractions and really fun to visit, particularly the ice jump, luge and official Olympic center. From a historical perspective, the town is wonderful.
I was first introduced to Lake Placid about 4.5 years ago when my husband brought me on our first «out of town» trip. I fell in love with the pristine natural beauty of the area, great restaurants and phenomenal hiking. To me, there is nothing better than getting up early, hiking for 6 hours (and pushing yourself until you can’t breathe and feel like you can’t do it anymore… only to get to the top and be overcome by appreciation for being alive!), going for a swim, sitting by a campfire and having a few beers. The whole town smells like a campfire and that is just awesome to me.
Mirror Lake is 2.7 miles around the perimeter and a wonderful jog/​run. You can rent kayaks and paddle boats and enjoy being on the water with the backdrop of the high peaks. I love kayaking! I love Lake Placid. Parts are touristy but for me the shoulder seasons are the best times. Take a hike, give yourself sore muscles, sit by the fire, drink a few beers and totally chill out.

Came here once when I was younger. It’s a pretty cool small town. Did mostly fishing and white water rafting in a different place not far from here. Very memorable trip, had a whole bunch of Ben & Jerry’s on Main St, and ate at various restaurants around town. It’s a beautiful town with gorgeous views. If you’re looking for a nice getaway, this would be it. It’s quite a long drive from NYC but its worth the trip.

Lake Placid is dubbed as one of «6 Forgotten Vacation Spots» in North America. In my mind, forgotten but not lost. It’s a small town that famously hosted the 1932 and 1980 Winter Olympics.
Lake Placid is about a 6 hour drive from NYC (with traffic)… but it’s a very easy drive. The highway is I-​87 N.
My two bucket list items?
— Dog Sled — run by an independent operator on Mirror Lake (Main Street side) — $ 10 per person

Between my significant other and I, we had a Verizon, T-​Mobile, and AT&T phones between personal and work mobile phones. Coverage wise, Verizon worked the best, then AT&T, and then T-​Mobile. Most areas had voice service except for in between towns (i.e. Lake Placid and Saranac Lake). Data service was hard to come by; reliance was placed a lot on wifi access provided by local businesses.

Aber ich gehe davon aus, jeder kennt diesen kleinen Ort, hier fanden 1932 (
) und 1980 (
) Olympische Winterspiele statt.
Als wir 1994 dort waren, wehte noch die DDR-​Flagge stolz am Mast im Reigen der Flaggen der Teilnehmerstaaten. Das zu sehen war schon ein komisches Gefühl, schließlich gab es die DDR schon seit ein paar Jahren nicht mehr.
Oben auf dem Podest der großen Sprungschanze war mir dann doch anders, ganz anders. Seit dem habe ich noch mehr Achtung vor denen, die da mit zwei Holzscheiden (jetzt Plastestreifen) an den Füßen da runter rutschen.
Auch die Stadt selbst ist schön, eine Kleinstadt eben.
In einem Künstlercafe wollten wir was essen. Ich wollte natürlich auch ein Bier trinken. Und da kam die Überraschung, es gab auch ein deutsches Bier, 0,33 Liter Becks für 8,50 $ (so viel Geld für 0,33 Liter Becks!!! Da gibts für mich zu Hause aber viel bessere Sorten und PREISWERTER!).
In irgendeiner Straße fand ich in einer Auslage eines Schmuckgeschäftes einen HERKIMER DIAMANTEN (
), ein Quarz mehr nicht, die chemische Formel lautet SiO2 (Siliciumdioxid, nach Feldspaten das zweithäufigste Mineral der Erdkruste). Er (
) entstand vor ca. 300 Millionen Jahren (Karbon) im oberen Kambrium durch Dolomitisierung (Austausch von Kalzium gegen Magnesium) in Hohlräumen.
Aber es ist ein besonderer Quarz, doppelendige Bergkristalle, ein Naturwunder (
) .
Seinen Namen hat er von der Fundstelle, in Middleville (
), Herkimer County (
), New York, USA. Und wegen seiner fast einschlussfreien Klarheit, der geometrischen Form und dem starken Glanz der Quarzkristalle kommt der Diamant hinzu. Diese Qualität lässt auf einen langen bzw. langsamen Wachstumsprozess schließen.
Ich wusste nur, dass er etwas ganz Besonderes sein soll und fragte den anfänglich netten Herren im Laden hinter der Theke in gebrochenem Englisch interessehalber nach dem Preis.
Ich erhielt keine Antwort, aber einen Blick, als hätte ich angekündigt, ihm seinen HERKIMER DIAMANTEN zu klauen.
Das war dann doch irgendwie schon ein komisches Gefühl. Ich fühlte mich ertappt, obwohl mein Interesse nur dem finanziellen Wert dieses Minerals galt. Mit einem Lächeln und einem ehrlich gemeinten Have a nice day! verlies ich doch leicht betroffen das Geschäft.
Aber diese Betroffenheit hielt nicht lange an, zu viele positive Eindrücke hielt diese Kleinstadt für uns noch bereit. Aber DIE könnt ihr selbst erkunden…
Unser Besuch in Lake Placid (
) und der Sportanlage war ein besonderes Erlebnis während meiner Reise und wer mal da in der Nähe ist, sollte in diesen Ort einen Abstecher machen. Es lohnt sich.
