The country house is like an old country house inside without the charm. I’m an antiques lover. Growing up on the east coast, I’m used to lots of true antique stores(not just ones selling old stuff), particularly in Hudson, NY – a Mecca for any New Yorker. I thought I would go check it out last fall. I walked in in my mommy duds(aka not spiffed up to the nines). The woman casually greeted me and I walked about freely. A lot of pieces were unimpressive and rather ordinary IMHO. At the time I was looking for a larger secretary piece. They had a couple that were in rather poor shape. Drawers not opening. Wooden decorations missing. The folding part of the secretary gone. Peeling. And when I saw the price I thought it was a joke. So I approached the woman about the price. When I mentioned that the piece wasn’t nearly worth what they were asking she was very dismissive and told me perhaps my knowledge of antiques was limited. Um, excuse me! But there is a significant difference between selling quality antiques and rundown old furniture. Perhaps the market of Lake Forest is foolish enough to pay these gouging prices but not this lady. I walked away and haven’t looked back once.
