You have to pay critical attention to what the doctors here order. Seniors are especially vulnerable and usually accept anything that is ordered because they hold their doctors to a godly height. Be the advocate on behalf of your seniors. Multiple times doctor has been trying to schedule diagnostic tests for my 91 year old mother that we know will lead to nowhere. Since she is «too high risk» for any lung, heart, or colonoscopy or bowel surgery we declined multiple attempts to have her undergo a cardiac MRI to «check her heart valves» and yearly stool test for blood because her gastroenterologist advised no colonoscopy in event of a positive stool test. My mother’s doctor went ahead and ordered a chest x-ray to check the heart. For what? We gave in – dummy… Remember, my mother is 91 years old. Even her cardiologist doesn’t order CXRs to «check her heart» or other tests to check her heart valve because even if the findings are not good, she is not a candidate for any invasive treatment or heart surgery at her age he said. MMG’s new MRI machine cost them millions. They need to pay for this. A heart MRI test can cost up to $ 5000 depending on the complexity. And, you have to pay the radiologist too. For seniors, Medicare pays most and the patients pays some. No wonder Medicare is going broke, but in the meantime facilities like Maui Medical Group reap the benefit. When a mammogram was ordered for my mother, the doctor also scheduled an office visit«to followup.» She already had an office visit scheduled a few weeks afterwards for her usual 6 month visit. Needless to say, when we got home, we canceled the followup. Well you know, multiple visits multiply profits and we would have been dummies yet again had we not been on top of this. Now, instead of seeing my mother every 6 months, as is common, doctor wants to see my mother every 4 months. Everything is her last visits were good, even better than 6 months before since she is now at a retirement facility and eating much healthier foods. I guess, they need to pack in the visits before her demise. Question EVERYTHING for your seniors and know that you have the last word on what is ordered. And you have the right to decline if it is not appropriate. Be educated and be an advocate for your seniors and at the same time, watch out for yourself.
