Love the special nigiri coco calamari. It is so tender and flavorful. And it go wrong with pineapple and tofu nigiri.

Thought the wife was trying to trick me when we showed up at a sushi bar with no fish, but it was awesome. Food was delicious and fresh, and I got to try a bunch of vegan stuff that I’d usually laugh at… and it was great. I’d definitely come back.

I visited Garden Sushi several times last winter during my annual escape from Boston’s wintery mix. The little restaurant’s food was so outstanding that I was eager to return. And now I can say that all my expectations were exceeded. I recommend the nigiri sampler for starters. But you can’t go wrong. Be sure to tray at least one of the daily specials. My companion wanted to keep ordering more and more things. But out of respect for the excellence of the chef’s artistic/beautiful/tasty offerings I insisted on approaching the evening as I might a fine art museum where my goal is to sample merely the best of a particular painter’s works. Garden Sushi is not to be missed!

This place deserves its own location. IMO, it deserves a spot in SF. It can be confusing since the main name for this place is Choice Health Bar, and both parties only serve their menus at their designated times. So between 6pm-9pm, you can get vegan sushi but no acai bowl or smoothies, and vice versa between 8am-4pm. We happened to find out about the sushi while randomly looking through one of those many free Maui magazines when we were waiting for our to-go order from another lunch spot. The pictures of the food looked yummy and fresh, so we decided to eat there for dinner that night. We were greeted with the traditional Japanese greeting and sat at the counter to watch the food action. We ordered the nigiri sampler, grilled soba noodles, and rainbow roll(all the good stuff Unilocalers recommended). There really is only 4 people working here — the waitress, main male chef making all the sushi, another woman who appeared to be the sous chef/cashier, and a girl washing all the dishes. There were only about 6 other diners in the restaurant, but the food still came out a little slow. But when the nigiri and roll came out, they were beautifully presented with each garnish delicately placed. The flavor combinations may have sounded weird together(avocado and leek with curry miso, roasted beet with green apple and chive) but every single piece was delicious. Every time my husband and I took a bite, we kept saying«Wow. this is so good. Wow.» The grilled soba noodles had a great flavor with the mushroom dashi broth. There was a dessert special for that night — coffee jelly with semi-dried fig and cashew cream. We were skeptical about the«jelly» part, but we went for it. And man, I’m glad we did. The jelly was a gelatin consistency and the coffee flavor was smooth yet strong. It was topped with strawberries and walnuts and the cashew cream was perfect to help cut through the strong coffee flavor. We walked out of there wishing we found this place sooner in our trip. We told the waitress that they needed to come to SF, and she asked if we would be an investor. Haha I wish I could! This place reminded me of Cha-Ya in SF(another vegan Japanese restaurant), but dare I say, more flavorful? Yes, I will say it — it’s better than Cha-Ya. Cha-Ya may have an extensive menu with noodles and rice dish options but this place knocks it out of the park with their sushi. The menu here is very limited, but you will not be disappointed with your selections. Unless of course you’re looking for fish, then go elsewhere.

My wife and I are vegetarians and wanted to give this place a try. We have been to a few places back home that serve vegetarian sushi and so were curious what this place wold offer. The place is the same space as choice health bar but seems to be run by different people overnight for Garden sushi — the seating is therefore limited and you may end up at a community-like table, which was fine for us. The hostess/server was kind and greeted us promptly. The service is slow but that’s because there are literally four people working there — the hostess/server, the sushi chef, a lady plating/serving/answering the phones and a guy doing the dishes. With the exception of slow service, the rest of the experience was great. We got the veggie dumplings, which were fresh and handmade though lacked robust flavor(read: kind of bland) to start along with the grilled soba noodles(slight crisp/crunch to the noodles which were in a light mushroom sauce with veggies and sesame seeds) which were delicious. We ordered the aloha roll(my favorite — I really enjoyed the pineapple on the inside and the mac nut on the outside) and the dragon roll(my wife’s favorite — not only the avocado but really the black paste and thai basil leaves were the flavorful touch on this one). We enjoyed the experience and would recommend it to vegetarians looking for a fresh and healthier meal.

Delicious! Agreed the dragon roll was amazing; also the veggie dumplings and salad were a great way to start the meal. So excited to find a vegan option on vacation. This is a Maui must!

If I can give this place more stars, I would. Like others have said before, you definitely don’t have to be a vegetarian to appreciate the artistic and magnificent creations from this little place. The service/food might be a bit slow but well worth the wait. This is one the best restaurants in west Maui! We had the mushroom soup with truffle oil, sushi sampler and the white dragon roll. The attention to details make each dish look like a piece of art. When we had the first bite of the sushi, we were greeted with pleasant yet complex texture and flavors. We would have never expected a «vegan sushi» could be so tasty! This restaurant is in the Choice Health Bar location at night. It’s in the same parking lot with Taco Bell. Plenty of parking available.

Excellent vegetarian sushi! I had the aloha and dragon rolls and they were absolutely delicious. The menu is quite small, not too many options, but I’m curious to try more!

This is my Fave place right now on Maui! Other reviews are right, you don’t have to be a vegetarian to enjoy garden sushi. I love the Choice Bar/Garden Sushi interiors first of all. They serve something new every time I visit. You can enjoy each dish visually like a piece of artwork. Avo martini is a great starter. We usually order soba dish and bunch of sushi. Each one is full of flavors that you can’t believe there’s fish in it! I tell all my friends to go if they haven’t tried yet. I can’t wait to go again!!!

Vegan or not if you enjoy good food, a must try! The food is delicious. Staff are friendly, welcoming, and attentive. Started off with the soba noodles which had a pleasant crispness to each bite. Very tasty and was not overwhelmed by saltiness or sweetness. It was just right. Next was the sushi sampler. Pure artistry. You might need to like veggies to truly enjoy the taste of each nigiri. Not a vegan but I enjoyed it. Also had the dragon roll which was good. Each bite had a very subtle sweetness which makes it difficult to describe but very enjoyable to eat. Finished with miso mushroom soup which was a perfect way to end my meal. The best part was feeling great after my meal. Didn’t feel guilty about the money I spent nor did I feel bloated or disgusted by the food I ate. Highly recomend garden sushi.

You definitely don’t have to be a vegan to enjoy and appreciate the food at Garden Sushi! It is absolutely delicious. I love the Dragon Roll and the Aloha roll, but also recommend the green beans and the edamame. Hats off to the owners of Choice Health Bar for partnering with the Chef to create Garden Sushi.

So delicious! Each piece of sushi is unique, beautifully crafted, and amazing. My husband and I have tried vegan sushi in LA and San Fransisco. This place stands out as a very simple, fresh approach to vegan sushi that left me feeling satisfied and healthy. Even if you’re not vegan, I think you’ll find this place has a lot to offer. The sampler platter is a great way to go!

Was looking for sushi and didn’t realize it was vegetarian! I was very skeptical but surprisingly pleased. The dragon roll is REALLY good. The Alo~ha roll, tasted a little weird with the sweet pineapple and was very vegetable tasting(but I’m not s vegetarian). Open for dinner only and is inside Choice — juice bar during the day. Guess they share the facilities, but we almost missed it because we hadn’t seen the sign. Small place but good presentation and service.

I went here for my birthday while visiting Maui and this place was absolutely wonderful! As a vegetarian, I don’t often get sushi, so this was a luxury! The staff was really friendly and the restaurant had a homey feel. It wasn’t too crowded and the restaurant is really small and not too loud so you can carry on a conversation. We got the garlic edamame, the nigiri sampler as well as almost every type of roll except the cucumber one. Everything was delicious and you can’t really go wrong! They are also BYOB, which was great since we were celebrating my birthday. The staff brought an ice bucket as well as wine glasses and sake glasses. During the day they are Choice Health Bar, which I did not experience, but if the sushi is any indication, they are probably delicious during the day as well! I cannot say enough good things about my experience. I highly recommend going here! I even left with a tank top and one of my friends got a hat!

You don’t have to be vegan or vegetarian to appreciate the artistry of the sushi here. Or the taste. The flavors are amazing, the combinations unexpected but delightful, and the presentation gorgeous. I lived in Japan for 10 years, so I know good sushi when I eat it. No, there was never anything in Japan like this, but someone who loves sushi can appreciate when it’s taken to a new level. This is sushi like it’s not been imagined before. Close your eyes and enjoy. Even the miso soup has a different flair. Order the mushroom miso soup – you won’t just be getting miso soup with mushrooms in it. And try the appetizers, all variants on traditional Japanese appetizers but with a special Garden Sushi something added to them. This is a place to become addicted to. A place to take out-of-town guests who think there’s no interesting food on Maui. A place to get to sooner rather than later. You won’t be disappointed. You WILL be amazed and gratified and thankful.
