This place is awful. I went to pick up food from here and as i walked in the customer before me was so upset she was nearly crying. When i got my to go order, the hostess was extremely short and rude to me as well and acted as if i was bothering her when checking about a certain item. As i walked out the previous customer informed me that she had a special order made for her ill mother, which was called in the night bf and was to be ready by 11am. It was 11:45 and she just received her food. This isnt the first time I’ve seen upset customers. Horrible service, even with to go orders.

I’d give this place 0 stars if I could. We waited for an hour for our food evan though the restaurant wasn’t busy. Then when it came out they put it on the wrong table. After those people picked through it they picked it up off their table and simply placed it in front of us at which point we promptly left. We will never go back.

The food here is like frozen Mexican TV dinners. It’s just nasty! My drink was good but when I got to the bottom of my glass there was food stuck to the bottom. I wouldn’t eat here again if someone paid me and they were giving the food away. Some of the tables are wobbly and my friends drink fail off the table. Everything feels covers in grease. This place doesn’t come close to one star!

Some co-workers and I did lunch here while on a business trip. I liked the way the main dining room gave the impression of a patio environment with the high ceilings and the skylights. Chips came out right. They are not an extra charge as they are for many Mexican restaurants these days. I ordered the grilled fish tacos which came with a side of rice. They were good. The sauce was different from where I usually order fish tacos. Different tasting, but not bad. Service was great. Waiter was around and kept both the drinks and chips refilled without us having to ask. If I get back to Lafayette, I would be willing to eat here again for lunch.

Yea I am with Brian — this place is crap. Not only that but its not very clean, has dated décor that prob has not been updated since the 70s and I would really rather eat at Taco Bell than at this joint — and I do NOT like Taco Bell. There a a LOT of pretty decent Mex places in Laf. This is NOT one of them. Stay away.

I adore Tampico simply because it’s a family place for me. My mother has been going for about 12 years. However, she said the good quality has decreased a lot over time. At Tampico, you will eat the best salsa in the world. Also, if you don’t know about it, ask for the cold salsa or «the salsa from the bar». It’s not something many people know of, but it’s fabulous. When I visit Tampico, I get very full on just salsa and chips and I never want any food(because it isn’t that great here). Don’t come if you’re not a salsa fanatic.

Mexican food is plentiful in Lafayette, and the fact that Tampicos has been here literally FOREVER means they are doing something right. The drinks are good, but it can get really hard to get the bartenders attention later in the evening. Also, I’ve had a couple really bad experiences service-wise sitting in the bar area. The food is decent, location good, and margaritas are great. My choice, however, would be La Pagua or Coyote Blues.

«Absolute Crap» … There are two choices to make here. Across the Street is Coyote Blues. You can go there and enjoy a good meal or you can go here and suffer. The chicken tasted like it was from a can. As did the salsa… as did the beans. In fact, I am pretty sure the best the cooks at this place can do is open a can opener or microwave door. I get the impression the place stays in business for its drinks rather than its food. Its more of a bar atmosphere. Prices were also very high for the quality of the food. Overall, a horrible experience and a place that merits bankruptcy. Anyone that is reviewing this place as having good food is not on the level.

Tampico’s has been my favorite mexican food my whole life. Granted the food at the original restaurants in Bayou Vista and Morgan City are slightly better, the food is still great at the Lafayette location. They have an outdoor area which is always a plus for me anywhere, but it faces west… which is a problem during the hot months because the sun sets in that direction. The margaritas are great too. I love this place :) Personal favorites are the super nachos and the burrito alegre(the happy burrito)
