The Haircutters

Im sorry to have to write this as my mother has been a loyal customer for years now but I feel I must warn the public: do not let Alicia do your hair color! I She did the 2 things I specifically told her NOT to do despite my having a photo out for her of what I wanted and she damaged my long hair so badly that I can no longer brush it without large chunks of my hair breaking off. Honestly, what she did was horrible. She either has no idea how to properly do color without damaging it, or shes so aggressive she just doesnt care. She bullies the other hairdressers and clients. My mother is afraid of my complaining because of the repercussions Alicia will cause passive aggressively. My mother is older and cannot drive far to other salons so this keeps her bound to this horrible place. Unbeleivably they are now haggling with me about fixing it! Yvonne (store manager) is upset because in order to do the least damage and to color correct the cheap blonde And HOT PINK hair Alicia humiliated me with, Yvonne (manager) had to pay the stylist who was called in to fix it $ 40 («out of the cash drawer!» Of course! Where else would you reimburse an employee from?! Its the managers fault they used damaging product to begin with!) Danielle (the savior) spent out of her own pocket (!)to buy decent product. In other words ladies, this salon uses the cheapest products which will fry your hair! JUST DONT GO! This has been a nightmare. I hope they will rectify the situation immediately so I can follow up with good news although nothing they can do will ever bring back the hair which has broken off due to the damage. My boyfriends first remark upon seeing my new $ 120 hair color: «what did they do?’ Were they entering you in the worlds worst looking hair color contest?!» Im a 40 y.o. Brunette who was made into what looked to be a trashy blonde with grown out roots, fried hair, and hot pink bangs and highlight in the front only. It was not only humiliating but did irreparable damage.

I’ve been coming there since I was a kid and always had a great experience but since my hair stylists no longer work here I’ve seen Sue two times before and twice I got a lot very good experience. She is ways rushed and seems lazy to do a women’s hair. I come in telling her what I want but come out looking how she decided to do it. Today she was mad because I told her that she’s not styling my hair right. She didn’t want to curl my hair she said she would curl the ends but that’s not what I wanted so I’m not getting it. She told me as I paid she was in a hurry and she didn’t want tip so that explains why she didn’t style my hair like the picture I showed her. Anyways. I styled my own hair when I got home because she was doing her job in a hurry. $ 21 for just a trim is too much in my opinion, especially when I have above shoulder length hair.

I likes the place people were nice but Idk if it was the girl that I got but I felt like she didn’t know what she was doing my hair looked nothing like the pic I showed her and she told me my ends looked really ugly in those words just rude to me

I signed up on Unilocal JUST so I could affirm the great service I received today from Haircutters in La Mesa. As others have written, Katie was my stylist and she is AMAZING. She is very talented, taking 5″ off my hair, knowing exactly what style would work with me and consulting with me on the cut, giving me a perfect cut and then blowing it dry exactly the way I like to wear it. All this in less than 1 hour, with comfortable conversation and a totally enjoyable experience. I had an important meeting a few hours after this cut so I took a big risk going to a fairly new stylist for me (she had cut my hair about 9 mos ago)… but my hair looked great and I love my new cut! Thank you thank you! Katie is tops and I would go to her forever but I learned today she is moving to FLA in a few months — get in to see her before she is gone! Also, the staff here are welcoming and professional, the atmosphere is comfortable and inviting. I highly recommend this location — AND KATIE! I wish you and your family all the best and I really appreciate you.

I’ve been to several other Haircutters locations over the years, and I must say this is the nicest. I wouldn’t consider it high-​end (although I’m not sure I’ve ever been to a «high-​end» place to get my hair cut), but it’s clean, well-​maintained, and looks to have been furnished within the last decade. The staff is friendly and the prices are reasonable (less than $ 20 for a haircut). Carmen is my «haircutter» (ha) of choice, but they always appear to be fully staffed so the wait is minimal, if there even is one. Just getting there can be a little tricky though… I always end up going through downtown La Mesa — the plethora of criss-​crossing, maze-​like, oh-​shoot-​am-​I-​going-​the-​wrong-​way streets are a bit of an adrenaline rush!

Katie is THE BEST colourist you can ever find! I’ve been going to her for almost two years now with never a bad experience. When I first moved here two years ago I didn’t know where I could go to get a haircut and a friend reccomended this place. I actually got my haircut from Alicia who is also great, but only for haircuts. While I was there for the first time I saw how Katie was so personable and eager to please her clients, and the end results were fantastic that I knew I found my stylist! It is so hard to find a decent stylist that doesn’t overcharge you. Yes, I know that it is in a mini strip mall with Vons being one of the biggest stores there but don’t let looks deceive you.

Katie is THE best when it comes to color, cut, hair care and charm! I drive over 100 miles one way just for the pleasure of her company and the amazing hair color work she does! She’s sent me to the moon and back from black brown, burgundy, red, strawberry blonde, honey blonde and various combinations in between including pink, purple, green and magenta extensions… Just the way she explains things gives you the utmost confidence trusting her with your hair. I give her full reign on my color and she’s never disappointed!
I’ve gone to local places near where I live and they’re inconsistent, fade unevenly and unflattering cuts. On one occasion after starting a new job in LA, a local stylist (who was referred by a friend) dyed my hair, everything past 4″ faded green after a week — she «fixed it» and it happened again worse! Desperate to regain my self respect, I scraped together gas money and ran to Katie who brilliantly fixed it! I’ll never make the mistake of letting anyone touch my color again! Everyone has had that bad experience where your hair looks so bad you don’t even want to look in the mirror let alone anyone else see you…
I have NEVER left Katie anything less than thrilled and I constantly get compliments on the color and cuts. If she were closer, most of the people I know would be keeping her chair warm for me! I’m also always leaving feeling a little happier beyond the fresh new ‘do because it’s hard not to love life after being around Katie for a few minutes let alone a couple hours! Even on the gloomiest days, she brightens everything around her.
I have followed her from salon to salon over the past dozen years and will continue to do so until she retires! Gas money be damned, she’s worth EVERY penny and more! Feels like my words are inadequate to express my gratitude for her hard work in making my daily life that much brighter.
