Local produce is worth the expense. Bought an odd looking dark orange squash, an acorn and a butternut. Haralson apples, a surprising tasty apple cider slush, only $ 1 for 12 oz cup and two very fresh donuts. We love cider but didn’t like the $ 6.99 per gallon price. Two peanut covered caramel apples at $ 2.99 each and they have fancy candy coated ones for $ 4.99 each. Employees are friendly and helpful.

We make the trek to Bauer’s from Saint Paul every October. Not just because of the scenic drive down Highway 61, along the Mississippi. Not just because we love Lark’s Toy Shop in Kellogg. Not even because the bluffs and valleys in their fall finery are some of the best in Minnesota. We come to Bauer’s because it’s among the last orchards in Minnesota with Old Fashioned Fireside apples – big, hearty apples, sweet, with a mellow tang. We also love to pick out our pumpkins here – don’t really know why, other than we like giving our business to Bauer’s, which has been operating as a family business for 40 years. October is a good time to pick up bulbs, planters, pots and gardening supplies at steep discounts, but I can’t say what Bauer’s is like as a garden nursery. Apples, though – around 40 varieties of apples compete for your taste buds, with endless samples cut just for you. Jams, jellies, bbq, root vegetables, roasted peanuts, pies, apple breads, cheeses, caramel apples – all local – might just leap right into your cart, but that’s okay, as long as you make sure that the apple turnover does, too. You can eat that right away, or, if you can wait that long, get it home and warm it in the microwave for 10 – 15 seconds, and thank your lucky stars(all 5 of them) for Bauer’s.
