STROLLIN’ WITHDA UnilocalERS BACKGROUND: With sweeping views of the San Gabriel Mountains, the trail is located on the upper slopes of Cherry Canyon. At the Ultimate Destination vista point there are two picnic tables and a hitching rail. Called the Ultimate Destination Trail for its panoramic views of the San Gabriel Valley and the Santa Monica Mountains, the trail of less than 600 yards connects to an extensive trail system in the 56-acre Cherry Canyon Park above Descanso Gardens in La Canada Flintridge. STATS: Distance: 5.5 Miles Elevation gain: Minimal Exposed maintained trail ESSENTIALS: At least 2 liters of water Know your limits Comfy hiking shoes with good lugs Layered Clothing High protein food/snacks Electrolytes Camera Hat(optional) Sunscreen Trek poles(optional) OURROUTE: Meeting in a parking lot near the soccer fields where the Catalina Verdugo Trail starts we followed fellow Unilocaler Cydney M. up a meandering, well maintained trail to a vista that overlooks to the south, Los Angeles westerward to the valley and to the north the majestic San Gabriel Mountains. This is a comparatively short and simple hike with the sense of accomplishment comes once you reach the summit of the mound at the Ultimate Destination vista point. There is a dedication plaque of a fallen local of La Canada who use to hike this area quite often, but was killed on the freeway just below. The impression of this trail by name is relative. I, as a technical hiker, prefer hikes that involve rock scrambling, bouldering, water trading and crossing and above all as far away from civilization either by length or appearance, as possible, wouldn’t consider this the Ultimate Destination Trail, however, I do feel that it is a great conditioning/training hike for those straining to increase their elevation speed. I too feel it is a safe spot for those who are looking for a short, relatively easy outdoor stroll. I wasn’t able to find any concrete information as to why this is called the Ultimate Destination Trail, however, I wouldn’t be surprised it got it’s name from the fallen hiker. DISCLAIMER: Hiking is not something that can be taken lightly. It can be life-threatening as you see and hear on the news, people die or get lost all time. Please, if you are going to hike, never go alone and prepare for the worst, hope for the best. Remember when going for a hike, no matter how short you think it may be, always be prepared. Carry at least two liters of water for every five miles(more if the weather is warm), protein bar, nuts, and electrolytes. Wear sturdy lug sole shoes and protective clothing. Some areas the weather can change quicker than a fireman can put on his gear. It is also very important, always always always let a family member or friend know where you are going and when you expect to be back. Lastly, have fun when you hike it up. #HIKING #TRAIL #LACANADA #VISTAS #OUTDOORS

Not sure what’s so «ultimate» about this destination, but it’s just a spot to rest about a third of a mile from the Catalina Verdugo Trail. There’s some tables, a water fountain and a watering trough. It’s pretty buggy and sunny, so be prepared to do battle with your deet and sunscreen. Unless you need to refill on water, I don’t see a real need to take this trail. There’s not a whole lot to it and isn’t nearly as rad as the name implies.(I was personally hoping for rainbows, waterfalls, and a pot of gold at the end of the trail).

Ultimate Destination Trail is a woodsy little trail that leads to a serene picnic area also known as Ultimate Destination. You can access this short trail just north of the Lookout Station or south of the Owl Trail. It’s only .62 miles and it’s elevation is about 190 feet less than the entrance off the fire road. The view of the San Gabriel Mountains is gorgeous and there are two picnic tables, a hitching post, water trough for horses and a refillable bowl for your dogs.
