Excellent food and servers and you might get to see Reba if you are there at the right time.

I needed desserts for two large families the day before Christmas eve and who came to the rescue. … the Blue Owl in Kimmswick. Don’t get me wrong the place is a little over the top hokey and the woman I ordered from acted like them not having everything I wanted was my problem not theirs. I disagree, I believe as busy as they were in there if they’d had the desserts, they would have sold them. Regardless, in the end I left with what I needed in the end and all of the items were fabulous. Thanks, we will order again next time!

I loved coming here years ago. Looked forward to taking my daughters and Christmas is the perfect time. The good home atmosphere is still the same. My disappointment was the food is not the same quality I recall. I’ve never been a fan of dark meat and the chicken was not an option. It was greasy and it dominated all else. My daughter found an eyelash in her dumplings. They serve a lot of happy people and it’s still a great modest tradition I guess I just outgrew. Best of luck.

The Blue Owl is a charming little spot to grab a meal and a slice of pie when visiting the quaint little town of Kimmswick. While it is my second choice restaurant in the area, it’s still a solid choice. I do feel like it has become a bit overrated in the past few years though, unfortunately. Once seated in the old-fashioned blue victorian restaurant, you’ll be greeted by a friendly server in a ruffly blue apron-style dress. I recommend ordering the Terrific Trio, where you can sample a bit more of the food. For around $ 13.00, you can choose three of the following: salad, soup, quiche, sandwich, or dessert. I’ve tried a variety of items this way including the strawberry salad, chicken chili, chicken salad croissant, and turkey club croissant… all were good choices. Of course, you MUST make one of your three items a dessert! There are soooooo many to choose from… pies, cakes, cheesecakes, cookies, pastries. So next time your sweet tooth hits, take a short drive to Kimmswick and grab yourself a nice little meal or pick up a whole dessert to-go after hitting the nearby shops. One thing to make note of before you go is the limited hours, as they do close early. Enjoy!

My brother grabbed me a slice of pie when he and his wife stopped by here. They got a slice of apple pie, which was truly delicious. It is definitely a size that requires one to share. I look forward to going here in the future.

Come to the Blue Owl once a year for a birthday, made reservations, couldn’t get the time asked at first, but Mary the owner and her ladies made adjustments and fit us in and made for a great day. Love the food especially the quiches, best chicken salad and wishes and cheesecakes & pies. They are the best.

Who doesn’t love the Blue Owl? You can’t go wrong with this place. Down home cooking in the heart of historical Kimmswick. To say they have fabulous desserts is an understatement. Choose from different pies, cookies & cakes. After your done eating, go shopping in the unique shops that are nearby.

Fish sandwich was very ordinary. Very poor white bread bun. Waitress was wonderful. Ran out of their famous apple pie and heard they had run out yesterday as well.

Well apparently this place is supposedly famous. I will start by saying that I didn’t try the pie which is what they are known for. Had the homemade Chicken and Dumplings. Nothing spectacular and quite runny. Was a little disappointed. Wouldn’t go out of the way to eat here again.

Lunch: fried chicken = ok, chicken and dumplings = extremely bland, green beans = tasted canned, strawberry salad = very good, BBQ beef sandwich = extremely fatty meat, seasoned waffle fries = best item we ordered for lunch. Desserts: caramel pecan apple pie = good, dirt pie = pile of basically whip cream, chocolate cake = good, lemon gooey butter cheesecake = very good. Overall: not worth the $ 100 we spent and the 40 minute drive. Our server was great even for being busy. IF we would ever return, we will skip their lunch/dinner food and just have dessert.

I’m so excited that I finally got to check this place out! After investigating the menu, I knew I needed to try some of their delicious pies or possibly a cheesecake! It was pretty darn busy(a Sunday around 3p). There were quite a few groups waiting for a table. Good thing I just wanted some take-out baked goods! I made my way back to the bakery counter and marveled at all of my options. I immediately noticed that there were samples out! — Pumpkin Gooey Butter Cheesecake. The texture was smooth and creamy and the flavor was right on target! However, I also spotted a Pumpkin Praline Cheesecake. I asked the lady at the counter how they compared and which she preferred. She immediately pulled the cake out, talked me through the layers and gave me a small sample on a fork. The crust tasted like a sugar cookie — sweet and chewy. The pumpkin cheesecake had all the cinnamon/nutmeg/allspice goin’ on that you want when you think of fall and Thanksgiving! And the top was covered in a layer of praline pecans! This was definitely even better than the Gooey Butter!(Also, have you ever tried the Pecan Pumpkin Cheesecake at Cheesecake Factory? This is better!!!) The Death By Chocolate also caught my eye — I was given another sample. On the bottom — a chewy, fudgey brownie. On top of that, a layer of chocolate mousse topped with whipped cream. The whole thing was light and fluffy and not overly sweet. My friend and I ended up taking all three home and stuffing our faces! I would definitely get the Death by Chocolate again. And I’ll be excited to see what new seasonal options they have next time!

My dad took me and my son to this little small town while visiting St. Louis. It was a really pretty little town, very historic and beautiful scenery. I enjoyed the shops and people. This place though was awesome. I didn’t actually eat the food but the desserts instead. It was fresh and portions were awesome. The next time I visit, I’ll have to try the food. My dad has and he says it will not disappoint.

Great place to go with the girls and have a great meal and funny. The food is great and the stuff friendly. Pies are a must if you can save some room for it. You will never go away hungry from here. If you have to take some home and eat the pie!

Pie. Get pie. Most definitely. On the other hand my normal staple meal of half tropical fruit salad and half soup lost a star after the past few visits. It doesn’t seem as fresh as it used too. I feel the quality has slipped a bit. It’s still a wonderful place to go and visit with a friend and eat and incredible slice of mile high apple pie!!! Maybe next time I’ll try something warm and cooked fresh vs. a prepared salad/sandwich. But there still will be PIE!

I’m adding another star after my last review because the server I had this time redeemed this place! The spinach artichoke quiche was as wonderful as it was the first time I went! I tried the white chicken chili this time and it was wonderful! My mom had the homemade chicken and dumplings(Sunday special). I tried them and they were amazing! We had my young cousin with me this time and I love that they offer kids size portions of the daily special. This place truly is family oriented! I wish I would’ve had room for dessert!

Dare I say that the only thing this place has going for it is the pies? Entrée — I have visited on several occasions and ordered lunch with desert, and have always felt a little disappointed with my actual meal. Nothing on the menu really is enough to make you want to come back. I have sampled a variety of the items and just was never impressed with any of my meals, they all seem pretty basic. I do recall on my most recent visit I ordered the Open Faced Roast Beef, and recall it being overly salty for my taste. Deserts — Yes, Oprah herself named Blue Owl’s Mile High Apple Pie one of her favorite things, and rightfully so. It is simply delicious, its loaded with apples and caramel making it a delicious sugar high, but hey it has apples in so at least you’re getting some of your daily allowance of fruit so it can’t all be bad. Other options are available however I wasn’t impressed with some of the other choices like the cheesecake, it tasted average at best. To summarize, if you order desert, stick with what the Blue Owl is known for, the Mile High Apple Pie! Just do not get the pie ala mode, it will be way too much and ruin the pie if you decide to take home your left overs! Atmosphere — The atmosphere here is cute, but I feel that it’s something my grandma would even have found tacky after a while. Despite the gimmicky outfits, the service here is always great. The staff is friendly and good at what they do, which would explain why many of the waitressed have been here for years! Another thing is to be prepared for a wait during weekends, as this place can get crowded. Overall I had a hard time coming up with an number for my review, however I decided that The Blue Owl as a whole is a solid 3.5 Rating(rounded up to 4 star), however the Apple Pies would be a solid 5 star rating by itself.

Holy Overrated Batman! I decided to make the trek down to the Blue Owl on our day off. I was expecting more from the whole experience. Kimmswick I thought was supposed to be charming… I just found it to be divey and rundown. Potholes were everywhere, I felt like I was playing Mario Kart. Once I got parked and inside everything about it seemed tacky. I know that might be part of their style/allure, but it wasn’t working for me. I could have looked past it if the food was actually good, but sadly it just wasn’t. The roast beef sandwich was as dry and flavorless. With an extra helping of gravy we could choke it down, but it was a huge letdown. The cod fish special for Good Friday also was not appealing. It was a cornmeal breading, that was bland and flaky. It didn’t stick well to the fish, so you were usually eating the cod bare, and trying to scoop up some breading to go with it. They were out of most all the desserts I wanted to try. I ended up with some type of chocolate cake, and it was only average. Any bakery worth anything could do better. I don’t intend on every making the drive down there again. I guess it’s something that a lot of St. Louis people have on their Restaurant To Do List, and I am glad I went, but I am also glad I don’t ever have to go back.

They do what they do, very well. I have been here for a ladies lunch for two up to a private Baby Shower for thirty. The food is always consistently good. Dessert’s make your mouth water. Plan your meal around your dessert. Personal Favorites: Strawberry Salad, Homemade Soups, and the Peach or Cherry Pie.

Thank God we thought to call ahead, there was a 35 minute wait when we called! Thankfully we were able to do call ahead seating. The place was packed when we arrived which was about 2:30pm on a Sunday. We figured it would of slowed down by then but it was still hustling. The food was alright. Definitely a southern home cooked food kind of place. They have tons of deserts. We tried some of their famous pies but weren’t overly impressed. The peach pie had some kind of gel substance inside it and didn’t really taste like peaches. The cherry pie was ok. My grandfather, however, loved all the deserts we tried. The service was very slow, and our poor server seemed quite frazzled trying to keep up. We also explored the shops around the town which were neat and had lots of unique trinkets. If you’re looking for any of the birthday cake statues for St Louis’s 250th, there is one here!
