Smokin’ Joe’s BBQ

Cheap good eats with great service. Been eating here every time we are in town. We even had them smoke a turkey for us one thanksgiving. It turned out amazing.
After writing this review we see a guy sitting there with a pistol on his belt for no reason at all in the quiet community. We got up and quickly left. I will think twice before eating here again.

Not much atmosphere, but the Q sure does make up for it :) Great place to go for a quick lunch!

Not a good experience… started bad, got worse. Suprised the health department hasn’t shut them down yet. Dozens of flies inside, had to fight them for my food. When they weren’t on my plate they were crawling on all the sauce bottles… can’t imagine how many were in the kitchen.
The food. Ordered a brisket sandwhich… meat appeared to be baked, had no smoky flavor. Wanted sauce but couldn’t get past the flies on the squit bottles. First two bites had more fat than meat… gave up. Fries looked sanitary so I added some ketchup… they were good, but the ketchup tasted sour (bummer). Mac and cheese was boring, probably two days old.
The only bright spot was the service… no complaints there.
I guess I should be happy I didn’t get sick… avoid this dive.

The pulled pork is made from Boston butts rendered over a ten hour gas-​fired wood fire. The pulled pork sandwich with coleslaw is probably the best on the East Coast. The greens are to die for and the beans and slaw are terrific. It would help to remember that this is a BBQ joint. Not fine dining.

I don’t normally like BBQ joints but let me tell you, this place was the BOMB!!! I had the chopped pork sandwich which came with two sides. I chose baked beans and mac and cheese both were great! Our waitress was awesome, kept our water glasses full. It was also very reasonable and the portion sizes were above normal. Overall the service was great, the food awesome and we had a good time. Would highly recommend this place in this tiny town of Virginia. We will definitely be returning.

Great food and great service! Had the soup special of the day She crab soup was to die for! Husband had the Joe’s platter and the picture says it all!

It’s BBQ. Sure, there are different ways to do it, and there’s is very good, but it just felt tired to me. The whole thing. The building is old, their staff is old (er), and God forbid if their food isn’t old.
The service is great, but it doesn’t seem like it gets that busy except when they do their all you can eat ribs. The food is mediocre at best and there are flies around the table. Definitely not an appetizing trait for a restaurant.
If they maybe spiced up the décor and improved their curb appeal, they’d really be doing something special. Otherwise, it’s just another BBQ restaurant in Kilmarnock.

* Baby Back (St. Louis Cut) Ribs = (4) very good… these are actually St. Louis Cut, which are meatier than Baby Backs, and not fall off the bone.
* Original BBQ Sauce = (4.5) Very Good… My Fav of the bunch;)
* Potato Salad = (4) very good
* Mac-​n-​Cheese = (3.5) good… but not great…
* Hush Puppies = (3) ok
NOTE: My only wish is that this location didn’t have Spare Ribs listed which are larger than Baby Backs and I didn’t see a dessert menu either??? I would have liked some Banana Pudding;)lol

This is a family review. Service here=0. We all agree, even the 5 year old. Do not go if other people are there, bc you won’t even get ignored you get a dirty look from the lone server. After 10 minutes we left. Drove down the road and then decided after much debate that we would do carry out. We called in our order and were told 20 minutes. I figured on 30. Wrong 60. So even carry out is not on par if it’s busy. Also the carry out was cold. Not like it went cold but like they grabbed it out of the fridge cold. This could be custom so we are not grading that
aspect. On to the food. We had high expectations based on reviews and the smell of the place is delicious. (that’s why we ordered carry out we had to have it after smelling it) my husbands vote is 5 stars for coleslaw and pulled pork BBQ. 5 for the sauces. Better than the «Q» in Richmond. Our son gave the BBQ 1 star. He is not a cole slaw eater. I give the pulled pork and sauces 4 the collard greens are a 1. No flavor. Our picky daughter compared the chicken nuggets to Wal-​Mart brand frozen nuggets. «Chicken» being used loosely. Overall we will try this place again for 2 reasons. 1. It seems very kid –friendly and having 4 we are all for that. (the kids that were there were dancing, having fun with the adults. They could get their wiggles out. 2. I am an optimist and I think if we go back on a night that’s not as packed our experience will be better.

Outside of North Carolina BBQ straight from the source, Smoking Joe’s is the best hands down

Our GWRRA VA O chapter rode to Smokin Joe’s for lunch today. Our group of 7 were all pleased with the quality of the food. The Baby Back ribs were to die for. I shared the ribs with my friend and we still had to get a to-​go box. They were meaty with good smoke flavor and would have been fine with no sauce. The fried okra and Mac and Cheese were also excellent. We WILL be back!!!

Great ribs! The people in the kitchen make it happen here. Always pleasant, great fast service. Summer Friday nights this is the place to be for live blues bands and outdoor bar in Kilmarnock VA.
The ribs are just right, pulled pork platters, too. Unfortunately some places smoking just overpowers the meat, not here. Sides are good, fresh tasty coleslaw, fried okra, greens, beans, hush puppies. As another reviewer stated, the mac n cheese is to die for!
They usually have pounds of ribs and pulled pork to go if you are impulsive and driving by.

Yummy pulled pork bbq. Delicious crab bisque too :) lunch prices are a steal! Dinner in a little expensive. Great family atmosphere, seating indoor and outside.
