First appearances were definitely deceiving. We went for dinner but the place was empty. We were going to eat in the bar but it looked sketchy. We wound up eating alone in the dinning room. It was actually nice. Not a fancy place at all. The waiter had on ripped jeans and a baseball hat but turned out to be knowledgeable, efficient and polite. We started with the antipasto. It was ok. Then I had veal parm, the wife had the lamb chop special… both were very good. Average size portions. Very Good tiramisu for dessert We would return.

Shabby and sketchy setting– food overpriced and not that good. Waiter was friendly but misheard our order and charged us an extra meal which the«boss» made us pay. Since it is next to a bar, it was rowdy and empty for a Friday night.

Bar is a dive. The restaurant part is from 39 years ago very very outdated. Now the bathrooms… lol id rather use the bathroom in Penn station Newark they are so disgusting I wouldn’t even let my dog take a dump in there. The bar stools are held together with hose clamps. When you order a mixed drink you get complimentary black mold pieces in your drink. place is dirty and the owners are cheap… The owner owns the liquor store across the street and«k“sold me a dollar off pack of smokes and only took of 50 cents… I guess 50 cents goes along way in other parts of the world but not here guy. if I could give negative stars I would. oh yeah don’t buy cigarettes at the liquor store across the street. The bar never buys back a drink even if you order 6 drinks don’t expect a buy back.

Yuck. Gross, dirty décor. Food was terrible and cost way too much for what it was. Only the bread was good and our waiter was very sweet.

Have been there several times since 2001. Umberto, the owner, is warm and friendly and serves and treats the customers well. Ive never have had bad meal here, and the portions are decent for the value. Ture, isnt not a fancy sit down restaurant, and yes its next door to a bar, which can get loud on a weekend night. BUT cost and value and taste carries the day, so I’ll continue to frequent Umberto’s.

Great wings and cheap beer. Regulars are friendly. Fifty cents for a game of pool one of my new favorite spots.

I cannot comment on the restaurant side but I have been to the bar area several times. This is a typical white trash bar lol but I love it. Everyone is so nice and they all know eachother. It’s like everyone is a regular! You cannot go here and not have a good time, it’s impossible! The first time I went my friend told me to prepare myself Lmao! This is not a place to find a date or impress people. You can go in sweats. It’s good ol family fun! Bert, the owner is also pretty awesome! Can’t go wrong w $ 2 beers and $ 3 shots!

I really like this place. Great escargot(not in the shell, not in a pastry puff) with lots of garlic, delicious penne vodka and terrific stuffed artichokes. A friend always gets the veal and loves it. Yes, the service is sometimes slow but fortunately I use the time to unwind and munch on their Italian bread. One of the best waiters around… he’s always smiling. And, while I go only about six times a year, when I walk in the waiter says«the usual?» It’s nice that he remembers.

it’s very slow service, but very good. the stuffed artichoke is great, as are all the pasta dishes. i don’t eat veal, but the veal parm is supposedly great as well. an old school go to.

Very disappointed with this restaurant. We went twice and both times were terrible. The dining room is very small, only about 10 tables. That’s not a bad thing. Small restaurants could be very cozy. My martini arrived in a large wine glass with three little olives at the bottom complete with a large white straw. We should have asked for the check and left at that point. I was in the mood for clams on the half shell and that’s why we chose Umberto’s. 10 minutes after placing our order the waiter came back and said that they were out of clams. I ordered another appetizer which took 20 minutes longer to come out. We waited another 30 minutes after we finished our appetizers for our salad and entrees which both came out at the same time. The food was uninspired and seemed more like food you’d get at a pizzeria. The cesar salad had the worst bottled dressing imaginable. And if it was homemade and not bottled, Heaven help the chef. The womens bathroom was one step above the bathroom at the local Exxon station. Needless to say, we will not be visiting this restaurant again.

been here 3 times in the past 3 – 4 years, very small… not many people. it is more of a early dinner place. Prices are low. but the company was not good… some lady was being typical Jersey Trash… my date went outside to use the phone and heard her on her phone yelling about child support. Then when she came back in she was in rare form and scared her own date off!.. Food wasn’t so great this time around asked for chicken breast. there was two. thin sliced. pieces of them… pasta and the sauce was good tho!

A gem of a family restaurant located on an understated corner in downtown Kenilworth, with a connecting bar and easy parking. Seats about 30 – 40. I went with a group of about 20 people. The menu was classic Italian and miraculously everything tasted cooked to order – no easy task for our large group. The clams oreganata were sensational and each main course came with a selection of veggies-refreshing. The staff was eager to please and exceptionally accommodating.
