Cozy, homey and delicious. The fish n chips was top notch and the Meatpie was to die for. Always a lovely experience.

Great Scottish restaurant. 1) Awesome food. We got Haggis(surprisingly excellent), scotch eggs(excellent), bridie, and meat pie. 2) Price was very reasonable, and the waitress was very helpful is giving us samples of most popular Scottish dishes. 3) Plus they have a Scottish shop attached to the restaurant.

Fish and Chips were as good as my husband remembered, but the service was glacial and inattentive when there were only 4 tables occupied. My Shepherd’s Pie was pretty tasty, but only ¾″ deep, the top 75% of which was potatoes. On top of that, there was something floating in one of the soda cups. Eww. It was a disappointing meal.

We ate at The argyle several years ago and liked it. Because of that, we looked forward to returning. Our second visit was very disappointing. Our waitress did not seem to be familiar with waitressing. She also couldn’t, or wasn’t interested in answering our questions. We ordered the Cod. It came with French Fries. I ordered a baked potato which was extra. We received one piece of fish and potato. I had a soft drink, my husband had water. I had a cup of coffee. Our bill was $ 44 and change. The price for the Cod was listed at &17.95 on our bill, and $ 13.95 on the menu. When we questioned this, the waitress could not find anywhere on the menu where it was listed at $ 17.95. She told us it was right because«that is what the machine said» Seriously? When we asked to speak to the manager, we were directed to the cook, who also could give us no explanation other than«it’s been like that since I’ve been here»(7years) he was belligerent. We paid and will never return. Also, the food was mediocre.

Just had take out. I had fish and chips dinner. If you like french fries order it but if you want fish don’t bother. One greasy soft piece of fish for 14 dollars.

Went for lunch on 2⁄27. I should have left when I saw it was empty at 12:45 on a Friday. Got out of there at 1:30, had to get it to go after waitress forgot to put order in. Still had hope though until I saw the measly amount of food I received. Very disappointed

Had the pleasure of dining at Argyles last night. The fish & chips were very good. Service was good. Paid the extra $ 3.00 for cod instead of Swai, 16.00 total. My wife had the shepherds pie, also very good. Disappointed in the appetizers. Crab stuffed clams oreganato were bland and pasty. No seasoning at all. The potato pancakes were also disappointing. They were frozen miniature Micky D’s patties. The 2 oz serving of coleslaw was server at room temperature? We had 3 dinners and my daughter had mozzarella. sticks for dinner.1 Soda. $ 80.00 total. If the appetizers and sides were better I might have gone with 4 stars.

3.5 I had a few things bookmarked in the Kearny area for notable food, Argyle being one of them and I’m a big fan of Fish & Chips. I love seafood and let’s face it, who isn’t a french fry person??? So this past Saturday night, while in the area, I had called them and they said they were open for dinner until 9pm, so we thought oh heck why not try them out. We arrived a little over an hour before they had closed for the night and to my surprise, there the dining hall was still filled with multiple parties, about a quarter of the room filled with families having dinner. The menu was Scottish – American. Your SCOTTISHEGGS, MEATPIES, HAGGIS with«Neeps and Taddies» were all present, including your ever so «American» Appetizer Sampler and Chicken Nuggets. I was surprised they flat out called it Chicken Nuggets, too. We weren’t looking to be too adventurous that night so I had gone with the traditional FISH&CHIPS which were a prized specialty of theirs considering how highlighted it was on the menu. By boyfriend ended up getting the SCOTTISHSURF&TURF, a Fish & Chips combo with a personal meat pie, and for a side, MUSHYPEAS for $ 1.95. We also had the option for Fresh Cod for an extra $ 3.00, so of course we took it. Minutes after ordering, someone from the kitchen yelled that there were no Mushy Peas, which was something I was really hoping for considering my entire plate was all deep fried. But I guess that’s what I get for strolling in an hour before closing? Our food was served at a decent time. The portions were fairly large overall, and the battered cod? It was huge!!! Practically the size of my two little fists clumped together. Overall the food was okay. But by the end of the meal, I wasn’t entirely impressed. I thought that the fish was cooked most decent out of everything on my plate. From the looks of my «tumor» looking fish clump, and having dissected the thing, it looked as if two pieces of fish were clumped and dipped in the batter together, and eventually cooked together. There was a few moments of batter-mush in the crevasses which I didn’t particular enjoy. The outside of the fish was very crunchy and the cod was cooked perfectly, but I think I would have thoroughly enjoyed it more if my fish were separated into pieces so that there wouldn’t be pockets of batter-mush. The FRENCHFRIES were right under the fish in ranking. My fries were room temperature and not crunchy. I suspect(because I watched them prep my food) that either A.) the fries that were cooked in bulk and served hot for the last four plates of food, were also given to us or B) they use the same temperature setting on the fryer for the fish and the fries which not necessarily always works. The MEATPIE? A half pass. The meat on the inside was okay, but the crust was thin and definitely not flaky. Service — 4.0 Ambiance — 3.5 Food — 3.0 Value — 3.5 Is it authentic? It’s half and half. Is it fresh? You pay extra for fresh fish, which should NOT be the case I think. Would I go there again? No.

Great fish and chips. That’s all I ever get so I can’t review anything else!.. But that dish alone warrants 5 stars

The restaurant itself makes some things well — the Irish soda bread and the meat pie I had were good. Butoverall nothing special and I found the prices high for the quality they offered. Though the waitress was nice, the look of the place and her attire suggested they needed new uniforms and desparate refurbishment of the place. it is clean but very tired looking from wear. The fish and chips batter was good but I agree — hardly any fish. The gift shop though is 5 stars and prevents this reviewer from demoting it to 2 stars. Well-maintained, nicely stock gifts of knick knacks and t-shirts from Ireland and Scotland. So, I advise: Offer a side with your dishes such as meat pies, improve the food, and renovate the place — if some of the older Irish bars in Kearny that had been OK just for locals but basically tired dive bars can be refreshed, then why not the Argyle? It is well-situation with the Piper’s Cover kilt and gear shop down the street. Is worth traveling to Kearny for? No. Better to go to Stewart’s Meat Market for that and then take out food from here if you feel like some basic Irish/Scottish fare. The exception may be worth a trip out here when they do Robbie Burns night and serve traditional haggis.

I’ll call this a 3.5 and round up. Really good fish and chips. Crispy coating, flaky fish. My only complaint is that the underside of the batter tasted a little undercooked. Still very good. I see quite a few complaints that it was all batter, no fish, but neither mine nor my friends turned out that way. Honestly, I enjoyed the mini pierogis more than the fish. The service wasn’t all that good, despite only 3 or 4 tables being occupied. The place looks a bit past it’s prime, but fortunately, I enjoyed the food enough to not really care that the place looked a bit wan.

Had the fish and chips… or at least I thought I did. For me it looked more like beer batter and chips. Once I found the fish hidden in the beer batter, I tried to eat it and it was very tasteless. All the malt vinegar wouldn’t have helped it. They should get rid of the kids cooking in the kitchen and place someone there who knows how add seasoning to food.

The Argyle has been around for years. Fish and chips runs you about $ 10. Fish is pretty good; fries are the typical frozen ones. Ok in a pinch. Not a destination for me.

This place has been great since I used to go as a kid. Amazing fish and chips. I have never found a better fish and chip place. I don’t think there are any. Must go here if you are in the area.

I went there after reading so many reviews. My friends and I ordered the famous fish n chips, meat pie and fry clams. The clam is ok, but a little bit dry. Fish n chip was ok. But the oil they use for deep fry is really dark which gives a weird taste on fried food. If they can change deep fry oil more frequently, the fish must be taste fantastic. If you never care about that, you can go there and have your amazing fish n chips. To me, the meat pie was not fresh. The meet had a stale smell and taste which makes me nearly untouched the dish. But the service was good

I decided to go this place the Friday night before my 5k. We arrived there at 8pm and it was decently packed; mostly families and older folks. My boyfriend and I ordered fish and chips. It was delicious! The fish portion was huge and the fries although probably from a frozen bag somewhere in their kitchen was great with the malt vinegar. The staff was really friendly and the bathroom was clean. It didn’t help my time for the run but it was a great meal!
