This little taqueria is not a destination, but it’s solid for a cheap, small lunch. The food is not expensive, nor is anything else. The décor is weak and the atmosphere is pretty damn sad. However, the people there are great people who run a small, honest business in a pretty rough area of town. They even have a food cart outside late at night to service the prostitutes, drug dealers, and brave people of late night Independence Avenue. Their service is simple, with tacos, burritos, tortas, and quesadillas. I measure my taquerias by the strength of their tacos, so that’s what I got. Compared to some of the other nearby taquerias, theirs was less greasy, even perhaps a little drier compared to others. However, despite their low cash-flow, Super Taco does put a small, inexpensive twist on the Mexican-style tacos they serve. Rather than just having meat, cilantro, and onion on a tortilla, they also throw in cucumber. In an area rife with taquerias, it’s the small things that count, and while this twist is small, it really lightens up the taco and gives it a little something new and different all for a pretty low price. I think I came away with 3 – 4 tacos for $ 6.

Bars on the windows. Check. Dicey area of town. Check. No reviews on Unilocal.Check. Noticiero Univision television blaring. Check. Hispanic muzak blaring over the above. Check. Exactly what I was looking for. Look, you don’t open a tacqueria in this area of town because it’s a dining destination. You open here because the rent is likely next to nothing and it’s all you can afford. Many of the building spaces on this block are empty. It ain’t Johnson County and you won’t find a Lexus parked here. So if you’re going to make it, you’d better serve damn good food. I found exactly what I was looking for in terms of food. Four tacos: pastor, lengua, chorizo and tripe. Very small double wrapped shells, moist, good portions of meat, cilantro, sparing amount of white onions on tacos, large side of pickled red onions to accompany. Four large, fresh lime chunks. Savory, moist, superb, as good as some of the best in town and better than most. Total bill: $ 7.00 so maybe a tad higher than some. $ 2.00 tip. The not so good: strong, powerful odor of cleaning fluid wafting through the restaurant and the server was mopping the floor. Bad idea. The interior is reasonably clean but there’s nothing fancy going on here. No dumb sombreros, colored lights or plastic fruit/bullfighter paintings. Skip that. It’s pretty sad. Takeout seems to be the thing to grab here and they were delivering it. No chips and sauce(thank you). Green sauce only, no red. Not a destination my friends, but if you’re looking for some great tacos and are humble enough to experience what the poor side of the city can serve up, you may gain a little additional respect for the other side of the world. Food: 4.5 stars Ambiance: 1 stars Service: 4 stars I dine at places like this for the unusual experience they provide. This evening’s meal delivered just that. Likely won’t return, but glad for the experience.
