Tasty authetic Mexican. Huge portions for cheap prices. Super-friendly staff. What more could you ask for?

The only thing I regret about eating here is that I didn’t do it sooner! I would give this place 6 stars if I could. This small, family-owned authentic Mexican restaurant deserves to become a permanent fixture in the 39th street restaurant corridor. I ordered the burrito with carnitas, and although it was monstrously large, I ate the whole thing at once because it was so good. I’ve never had a burrito that tasted so fresh. Most Tex-Mex restaurants serve burritos that are loaded with cheese, lard, and other artery-clogging crap but this one had a touch of olive oil, and lots of onions and cilantro. Amazing! Everyone that worked there was extremely friendly and welcoming as well. Trying this place is a must!

I returned yesterday for my menudo and was just as happy as can be with it. Again, I’d definitely recommend ordering off of the specials menu at a restaurant like this. The full menu has all the traditional mexican-american foods that restaurants expect you to want, and the specials are the things they really LOVE to make.

For fans of authentic Mexican or people needing a break from TexMex joints in Midtown, La Piedra Del Sol is a great option! We stopped in on the last Third Fridays on 39th. At first, we couldn’t tell if it was open because it was quiet inside. I hope this changes for this local place! When you go in you order at the counter in the back. The prices at this place are ridiculously inexpensive and the portions are quite large. I went with the Al Pastor platter. You’re given the choice of refried or charro beans. I’d never really had charro beans so I went with them. It’s more like a bean soup with chorizo and bacon and I really enjoyed it! The Al Pastor was pretty tasty. They do provide three types of salsa — mild, hot and medium. Go with the medium — it’s a green sauce and it’s pretty good! This place is worth a try. The people running it are very hospitable and my guess is if you make a special request, they will make it happen!

It may be a case of unrealistic expectations, but I just wasn’t all that crazy about La Piedra Del Sol. The staff was very friendly, and I want them to do well, but the food to me just seemed quite boring. Considering how much it had been hyped up(to me at least) I was woefully disappointed. Let me say, that you do get a good value for your money. I ordered a few tacos, and they were HUGE! In fact(and this is something you’ll rarely if ever hear me say), they may have been too big! The tortillas were stuffed to the brim with meat. The tortillas couldn’t withstand their greasy pressure, and were falling apart, making for a huge mess. The meat had a good flavor, but there was just SO much of it, with nothing else! I’m used to street-style tacos having ample cilantro and onion, an important component for both flavor and texture. Eating a giant meat tortilla just wasn’t appetizing. Maybe I ordered wrong, or maybe it was an off day. But regardless, I don’t have much motivation to go back. Bummer.

Great addition to 39th Street. Something different(even from the choices on the Blvd). Super friendly service. Good food and good prices. The food reminded me of being at a sweet grandmother’s house, one whom has been cooking for loved ones for generations. It is very comforting. The taco options are unique and the portions are huge. I highly suggest you go and give it a try. The flan dessert was AWESOME!!!

This is a nice little mom and pop Mexican place that should fit right in on 39th street. It’s small, clean, and unpretentious. We had a sampling of 6 of the 9 different styles of tacos. They’re not your typical little street taco with onion and cilantro served with lime — they’re more like giant mounds of their already sauced meat and served with 3 styles of salsa on the side. Of the ones we tried I liked the Cochinta Pibil style most. It was shredded pork marinated in adobo and orange that gave it a smoky-citrus flavor. The papas con chorizo was quite good too. The chicken mole was a bit on the dry side. For $ 1.50 per taco, you get an enormous amount of food for the price. They do not skimp on the meat! Try one of every kind, you only have pocket change to lose.
