Mark fixed my mandolin and I love it again. Can’t wait for the 2nd Saturday jam again there.

Disclaimer: the owners are long-time friends. Shoot me if you will, but I’m honest and if I didn’t feel this way I wouldn’t think of reviewing them. Finally, finally, Kansas City gets a great little acoustic music shop full of the stuff I love: mandolins, guitars, banjos and beyond. A full-service repair shop and their own line of instruments marketed under the Hawthorn brand name, and fine they are. For years this massive metropolitan center has had nothing of its sort. The old joke was, «what’s the best music store in Kansas City?» The answer? Mass Street Music in Lawrence. Don’t think the two are in competition. This is a new store with its own focus and more of a slant on resonator banjos with a few open-back models. That’s not Mass Street’s thing. The store is full of cool custom art, photographs, nick-nacks and other things musicians like me like. You’ll also find those supplies you need like strings, picks, capos, etc. Parked in a small strip mall a few blocks off of The Plaza, a great destination for folks visiting Kansas City looking for a place just like this. Finally, we have our own. I hope they do well. Living in Lawrence I won’t make it here often but when I do, it’s the kind of place I just want to hang around and enjoy. I think you might too.
