Mountain Road Cycles

I rented a road bike for 10 days. They gave me a great deal on the long rental. It was a new BMC carbon Gran Fondo. The bike was comfortable and they made sure it was set up right. They lent me a floor pump and some chain lube as I put in some big miles over the rental period. It was less to rent the bike than to bring my bike on United.

Wow! Can’t believe we are one of the first to review this business – but quite the honor. We just can’t say enough about the personalized service we received from Matt and Montana at Mountain Road Cycles during our recent visit to the Big Island. We rented both mountain and road bikes – equipment was in great condition (the Santa Cruz bikes were brand new!) and we had fantastic service. More importantly, Matt was diligent in making sure all adjustments and tweaks to the bikes met our needs. Above and beyond with recommendations for routes, sights, as well as good post-​ride beer, and steaks. Finally, it was evident these guys love where they are and what they do… they seemed as excited about our adventures as we were. That was probably the best part ;) Thank you Matt and Montana!

Sometimes the simplest things are the hardest to find. Case and point, a tire pump for presto valves. Not to worry, Matt had it covered, as you might expect, along with a friendly LBS vibe. Then the bonus, Big Island Brewhaus is in front of the shop. Great beer and a happening place.

Matt is an awesome guy. I was able to rent a Juliana Santa Cruz for the weekend and it performed fantastically. Most experiences with mountain bike rentals I’ve had in the past pale in comparison.
I recommend supporting these guys especially if you want to do the Mauna Kea trail. You can fly into town now which is super close to the bike shop. Just think no more worries about a rental car and lugging your bike on the plane. Sweat deal!

Rented a bike for a few days from here. Bike was about what I’d expect for a rental. The owner gave me some great recommendations for places to ride and made sure I had the essentials. Great prices.
And there’s some good beers next door. Winning combination.

I arrived in Hawaii with my bike yesterday evening and when I assembled the bike today the shifting was messed up beyond my ability to correct it. After a quick Google search I found myself at Mountain Road and Cycle.
One could describe this as a hole in the wall bike shop, but what it may have lacked in razzle dazzle it more than made up for in all the areas that count. I was greeted by the shop’s friendly owner, Matt, who I would later learn is a former pro mountain biker. Matt worked on my bike as I waited, replacing a cable and making all the necessary adjustments in a thorough and detailed manner. Prior to giving me my bike back he took it for a test ride, a key step often over looked by some shops. I really appreciated the attention that I received and the friendly atmosphere at the shop. As I waited I quickly realized that the great experience that I was having was no fluke. A number of customers came in as I was waiting and I could tell that each of them were big fans of Mountain Road and Cycle. So if you find yourself on The Big Island drop by this great shop if for no other reason than to say hi to a great guy.
