H&K Rooter and Drain Cleaning Service, LLC

We have used H&K several times over the past several years, and they have (until now) done an excellent job at very reasonable rates. My latest experience on October 20, however, was a far different experience.
About 5 or 6 years ago, when this company was Nelson’s Rooter and Drain Cleaning, they came and unclogged a stubborn shower drain for us a couple of times and charged $ 80 per visit — very reasonable for the job done. Late last year and early this year (under the name H&K), Ola (Hauloa), a young plumber taking over from his older generation, came twice to make repairs on slow drains, toilet repairs, and that same shower drain again. Ola was very personable, reliable, efficient, and did a good quality job. He charged $ 80 and $ 85 labor per visit, each of which lasted probably a little over one hour. Excellent value for good quality work. His business card at the time noted Hauola Lum and Kainoa Scheer as owners, hence the name H&K.
A couple of weeks ago, I called H&K to repair a leaking kitchen faucet and a bad squeaking toilet fill valve. Kaleo Kwan answered, was very accommodating, and scheduled a visit the very next morning. He got to work on the kitchen faucet and fixed it within 15 minutes (replaced O-​ring seals and repaired faucet line connections), then spent about 40 minutes replacing the fill valve. He also within that time did go ahead and clean the gunk off the underside of the flapper.
He invoiced us for $ 240, including $ 90 labor for the kitchen faucet repair, $ 110 labor to replace the fill valve, and $ 40 for parts. While the $ 40 parts cost seemed high, I thought the labor charges even more startling. I asked Kaleo to explain how the same company that consistently charged me $ 80 – 85 for an hour of plumbing labor (as recently as early 2015) would now be charging $ 200 labor for an hour’s work. Kaleo’s repeated response was that he charged us the fixed amounts that H&K always charges for certain jobs. That pricing structure, however, seems completely different to what was charged to us previously by the same company.
I then wondered if it really is the same company. Kaleo confirmed that it is still the same H&K. He did come in an H&K van, and explained that Ola was working the Leeward side. His invoice, however, was from Kaleo Kwan, not H&K. He finally offered to return a portion of the money we paid him, with the condition that next time we have a plumbing issue, we find another plumber. He said he would call and come by that evening or the next morning, but I have not heard from him since (8 days ago).
I have not been able to find a phone number for Ola, and I reiterate that I had nothing but positive experiences with him, and I would recommend him. Kaleo’s work quality appears fine, as he did fix the problems we had. However, I want other potential customers to understand that the H&K they request service from today may not be the same as in the past.

Do not use this company. Lousy job, will not return calls, to fix mistakes.
