I got a Brazilian blowout from Paul here a few days ago. I got the results I wanted from the blowout. I have thick, curly hair that frizzes in the Kona weather. I was a bit skeptical about how straight it would turn out. Since I’ve had it I don’t do anything but comb my hair after showering and it dries very nicely. He even gave me some nice shampoo and conditioner. I guess since the process of the Brazilian took so long he didn’t really put much effort into the cut. He basically just trimmed it which I don’t think is worth $ 60. I did get the Kamaaina discount which helped a lot. Otherwise, I would have spent close to $ 280 including his tip. My hair is smooth and sleek but I would have liked a nicer cut. If you are thinking of a chemical treatment this place is nice because they open the doors to air out the room.

Had an appointment with Michael and would certainly recommend him. He was professional and even educated me on my hair!

Today was my first visit to the Monimay Salon and I have to say that I was a bit impressed. I left there a happy customer. I usually have a hard time finding people that can cut my hair right. I have thick and straight «Asian» hair and most of the time it gets messed up. Paul at Monimay Salon took the time to listen to what I wanted and did an awesome job executing it. I wanted an inverted a line bob and got exactly what I was looking for. I’ll be back for sure!

I found Monimay Salon based on Unilocal ratings. I’m glad Unilocal directed me to Monica. I needed my roots touched up, and she did a great job: friendly, welcoming, fast service, high-​quality results. We’re staying on the Big Island for 3 months, so I’ll be coming back for a few more touch-​ups and hair cut.

I went in to Monimay Salon recently on a Friday morning, and had the absolute pleasure of meeting Monica who did my highlights… They are FABULOUS! Michael cut my hair and did an awesome job as well. In addition to that, Monica also alerted me that I had an area on my scalp that was suspicious and that I should see my dermatologist to follow up… I made that appointment with my dermatologist to check it out, who will now be watching that spot closely in the upcoming months. My dermatologist mentioned that there have been others who have come in with the same story… probably from Monica! Since this «spot» would have never been discovered by me, I REALLY APPRECIATED that she pointed it out to me. Way to look out for your clients Monica !! MAHALO Monica & Michael!

Great salon with excellent service. I found my new go to hair salon. Cezanna repaired my haircut that I foolishly did on my own and she did an amazing job. It’s hard to find a salon where every single stylist knows what they’re doing. Monimay is truly a gem here in kona.

My boyfriend knows the owner Micheal of this salon and he highly recommended that I check it out.
I was very impressed with the service. They were able to accommodate me even though I hadn’t schedule an appointment and all the chairs were full. Cezanna cut my hair and I couldn’t be happier. She knows what’s she’s doing (she has styled/​cut for celebrities while in LA!).
Interior is small but cozy. Comfortable chair and good lighting. They even offer you ice water while you are waiting!

I can now write a complete review. Two days ago, my husband and I had appointments for haircuts with Michael. We moved here several months ago and although we found a sweet hairstylist/​colorist, we hadn’t been completely satisfied. Within minutes, Michael assessed our hair and we each collectively had a long term plan. I loved my cut and for the first time, my husband didn’t feel balded after visiting a salon.
Fast forward two days later until my color appointment with Monica. In a nutshell – fabulous! She saw what I was hating and corrected it within a fraction of the time it normally takes me to have my color done. LOVE them both!
What a fun, personable, and knowledgeable pair who work on instinct because of their collective experience and expertise. I cannot wait to recommend them to EVERYONE I know and look forward to bringing visitors here looking for a great place.

I just moved on island from California. My roots and highlights were in dire need of attention. After researching Kailua-​Kona salons on Unilocal,I made an appointment with Monica. I am so glad that I did… my hair looks great. I also very much appreciated Monica’s graciousness after a series of events caused me to be late for my appointment. I will definitely be back.

Such a fabulous salon! My color looks so great exactly what I wanted. Cut is great for my long hair. I’m always hesitant to get trimmed in fear of too much length being chopped and too many layers put in. I trusted a friend’s recommendation and she was so right! I’ll definitely be back and I’ll recommend to everyone!

So grateful to find this salon! The space is cheerful and bright, and I felt very welcome from the moment I walked in the door. I was hiding my roots under a ball cap and as soon as I met Monica I knew I was in extremely capable hands. She gave me just what I needed and I am really looking forward to seeing both Monica and Michael again before I head home next month. The salon is so good, I am getting my hair done again here before going home instead of just waiting until I get home as I have usually done in the past :) They are very professional and you can tell they have both been in the business in excellent salons before they opened their own salon here on the Big Island. I have long, fine and curly hair and there’s a lot of it. Having come from a very dry climate, I was truly struggling with my «do». I didn’t know that humidity actually drys out your hair! So, I was at my wits end. Michael did an exceptional job cutting and styling my hair and leaving it long as I requested. He also gave me tons of advice for haircare when I asked. The salon is clean and simple. Don’t let that fool you, he is a master at his craft. I can tell how good he is by the care he took with precisely shaping the layers and my bangs. I think he does the best haircut in the Universe! Okay, maybe just this galaxy!

After moving here last year, I have put off finding a stylist/​salon. I think that I have found «my» place.
Monica and Michael make a great team. The appointments for color with Monica and the cut/​style with Michael were seamless. Both were wonderful communicators explaining their recommendations for my hair. I had pictures to show, however I didn’t share them because I felt confident that they were spot on with what they were recommending.

Just had my second hair cut from Michael and have to «Yelp» how happy I am with it. Yes, he’s done it again. Given me an awesome cut. I’ve never had such an easy-​to-​care-​for haircut, for which I am incredibly grateful. To me, it’s much more than a haircut … I consider it FREEDOM. Check him out. You won’t be sorry.

I have visited many high quality and very fancy salons in the past and when moving to Kona I was hesitant to trust someone new with my hair. Michael is wonderful!
There is nothing worse than going in for a haircut and coming out with hair shorter than expected. Michael has never done this to me. He does an excellent consultation, gives feedback, and then works his magic!

10 stars would not be enough for these two. I went in with a badly botched hair do and they turned me into a glamorous beauty queen with so little to work with from the start. Monica and Michael are excellent talented artists and Kona is blessed to have them. Go, just go, you won’t be disappointed. They have years of experience and remain cutting edge.
They both take the time to listen to what I want and make tactful recommendations. I have had my hair done by big name stylists and many other wonderful stylists, but NONE has pleased me (or my daughter haha) like these two. I am a new woman. Mahalo nui loa Michael and Monica. Muah!

I was in need of a men’s haircut and sought out a local biz on Unilocal.Based on the reviews, I elected to hit Monimay. So glad I did. Michael did a great job. He is a really cool guy who knows his business. Rather than the typical 30 minute chop job, he cut for an hour. And I am not exaggerating when I say that this is the best haircut I have ever received. The cut was two weeks ago and it is growing in perfectly. Michael offered me insider language to tell whomever cuts my hair next how to properly do so. He is a consummate professional and a very nice guy. Next time I am back on the Big Island, I will make sure to visit.

A great cut. A great experience!
I relied on fellow Unilocalers to lead the way to Michael here at Monimay Salon and I wasn’t disappointed. As a picky guy I am super critical when it comes to a new cut, and when I heard «no clippers, only scissors» I felt reassured. I was greeted warmly, offered drinks and snacks, and seated for a focused shampoo and cut.
After 30 minutes I had a cut that was exactly what I had come for (and more!) and have had compliments since. I’m lookin’ like a stud on the beaches of the Big Island!
Prices are about double that of a common barber, but fair and an excellent value for the quality of talent and service.
Can’t wait to return!

My husband found Michael and Monica for me from the mainland before we even moved to Kona. We took our daughter to Michael for a hair cut-​a HUGE hair cut. They were able to help us donate her hair to locks of love and the hair cut turned out beautiful. They listened, used photos and cut a ton of curly hair into a gorgeous bob that takes almost no time to do in the mornings. I’m next and can’t wait!
