Old location is closed… sign says they are moving next to Target at the gas station.

Buns In The Sun is a great local place to stop in and grab a quick local-style breakfast. The food is prepared to order and fresh.

The 2016 Unilocal 100 Review Challenge: 2⁄100 I love the name! This is only for the cupcakes. I went on a mini road trip with my homegirls, driving from Hilo to Kona. This was one of our foodie stops while in Kona. I didn’t get to order food here, but I wish I saw this place before I got my takeout lunch from some where else. It would’ve been better than what I had. While we were eating lunch one of my friends picked up some cupcakes from here and I remember it being okay-tasty. I don’t remember what the name of it was but it wasn’t too sweet which I liked. It was a yellow cupcake with thick caramel frosting with coconut shavings on top. Next time I’m here I want to try what they are known for… The Best Deli Sandwiches in Kona!

OHMYGOD! It takes us 1 whole hour in getting our breakfast. 2 omlette and 2 breakfast croissant. And there was NO line at all. The staffs lack spirit, no expression in receiving orders, work in slow motion. The food is just normal, nothing special, And it is only because we are starving and it made us appreciate the food more than its real quality. If you are hungry, DONOTGOTOTHISPLACE. But if you can wait, well, it can be a choice.

Extremely slow. Waited over 20 mins for just a basic french toast. Doesn’t seem like they do the orders in order either. French toast was nothing special.

Buns In The Sun, haha love the name of the restaurant. Yeah that’s how some of y’all are when at the beach, all buns in the sun lol! While doing some important business in Kona, we had some time to kill and besides we all were hungry. The trek from Hilo can really put some strain in the tummy almost to the«hangry» point. We decided to get a quick bite to eat at this place. You can get a free medium drink or a Kona coffee with your Unilocal check-in! Awesome!!! Getting the Kona Breakfast sandwich, scrambled egg, ham and cheese on a croissant did us good. Obviously ain’t the best or most impressive but it did cure the hunger for a bit. Buns In The Sun is basically a bakery, sandwich, deli shop. They serve breakfast all day, which is nice. I believe and I hope they do bake their own bread too haha! The place did have a nice amount of Kona traffic going in and out for their breakfast items. They got tables and chairs outside which were clean and comfortable. Lots and lots of parking, so that’s not an issue. They are open from 6 am to 4 pm everyday. The service ain’t bad, it ain’t good either it’s a little in between. Same goes for the food. Maybe if I come here again, I’d try their version of a Reuben.

the food was delicious which made up for the lack of hospitality. the young man who made our food was very kind, the young lady who took our order not so much. still, delicious breakfast!

Definitely no Aloha here. I try not to be overly sensitive to that since I know that its just a job for some of the people that work at these places and I know tourists can be a pain-in-the-ass at times. I really felt the cashier was really dragging her feet in greeting me and taking my order, almost felt like she was hoping id just walk out. I always order a Veggie sandwich and there veggies here are limited and the sandwich wasn’t great. They were out of the bread I wanted so I went with focaccia roll and it was way too thick and bready for me. I asked if they could wrap my sandwich in plastic wrap so it would fit nicely in my cooler, which they did with a bit of reluctance, why? It didn’t seem like an unreasonable request. Subway would have been better based on my experience here.

Probably the cheapest breakfast food in all of Kona! We ordered the signature croissant, side of hash, and a single coffee. For ~$ 10 the croissant was deliciously toasted, included an egg, yummy cheese, and kailua pork! Who would’ve thought that would be a delicious morning item! It was the right size to last you until lunch. People should definitely come if you’re needing to save money and if you’re on the go. Although the place doesn’t look 4 stars, the food makes up for it. There is a decent amount of in– and outdoor seating, and good and relatively quick service. Plus you get a free coffee if you check-in on Unilocal

I’m writing this review from boring Illinois as I sit dreaming about our trips to Hawaii. Each time we go to The Big Island, this is a must to visit. Everything we have gotten here has been delicious. The last time we were there, which was summer, 2014, the banana bread came out a bit dry. That will happen occasionally when you are getting something fresh and actually made from scratch.(Just as butter and it’s still perfect!) At our other visits it was delectable and is certainly something we will get again. The last time in Kona, we went here for breakfast 3⁄5 days. We would’ve gone 5⁄5 but made ourselves go other places. My daughter had the banana pancakes 2 of the 3 times and even now, a year later, she will bring them up as something she is craving. I remember having a kahlua pig breakfast sandwich– with egg on a croissant. It may not have been the last time, maybe our trip before. However, I do remember that It was excellent.(I make myself try different things each time I go– and I’ve never been disappointed!) My daughter’s friend absolutely loved her choice of a fried rice with eggs. My husband gets whatever pancake is on special and literally groans with delight through the entire meal! If you’ve never been here, it’s set back in a shopping center with mostly outdoor seats, and few of them. However, we are always able to find a place to sit. If you’re from the mainland, more urban area, it may seem like it won’t be worth the stop– no view, etc… I assure you it is definitely worth your time! Enjoy!

Very busy little breakfast place on the corner of a big shopping center. They have a good selection of breakfast items. Unfortunately, they don’t have espresso but that’s okay. They do have very yummy kona coffee in different flavors. I got the Kona Breakfast Sandwich. Ham, egg, and cheese on a deliciously buttery croissant. Mmmmmmmmm. It was very good. But how can you mess that up, right? I also tried the mac nut coffee. I usually don’t go for that kind of stuff but this time, I couldn’t resist. It was great! Add a little cream in there and you’re good to go! Only thing that could have been better is a minor detail. We ordered at the counter and then grabbed a seat outside expecting for our names to be called over a speaker or something. After waiting a while for our food, we decided to go in and check. It was just sitting up there on the counter… getting cold. Not that big of a deal. I suppose it was my fault for assuming, but you’d think they could mention that when you order or something. I would definitely go back to this place again. It’s fast, yummy, and inexpensive. How many other places can you get that in Kona?

Awesome spot for breakfast food and pastries. The stuffed breakfast burrito is always my go to. They recently added a homemade passion fruit drink to their menu. It’s ridiculously good and you get to keep the cool jar it comes in!

This review is long over due! I was in Kona a few days for work and stopped by this place for breakfast everyday. I have a sweet tooth, so naturally I gravitated more towards the rolls and the fact I don’t have time to sit and eat a proper breakfast. So a roll and orange juice on the road. It wasn’t very easy to eat as they are huge! If you have time in the morning, stop by and grab something. They have ample seating outside.

So disappointed :( When I lived on Big Island, a little more than 3 years ago, I always wanted to try this place. I was just never in Kona early enough. Finally got a chance during breakfast during businesss trip. Corned beef hash on specials board for $ 6.50 comes with eggs and rice or toast. I waited forever and was handed a plate with hash from a can! Who puts canned hash on special? I should have asked if it was homemade, I guess. Seriously, it’s not hard to make from scratch especially if you sell corned beef sandwiches already. The toast, rye, was the best part of breakfast. The sandwiches and fried rice breakfast looks good but I’m not sure I would go back.

This place was great! Went there for a breakfast on a saturday morning in march and walked away full and satisfied. Limited indoor seating but plenty provided outside with a roof over the outdoor tables. Friendly service and a menu that will make just about anyone happy. Check in on Unilocal and get a free drink(if I remember correctly). Nice big tv to watch sports/news on too. It’s in a strip mall which we found hard to located because Google Maps stinks when you’re on the big island. I had the sunnyside up eggs with sausage and rice… man that hit the spot. My wife had the pulled pork and rice which was also killer. The prices are VERY reasonable and you get a lot of grub for the price.

Always a great place to grab a coffee and breakfast. They open early — 5:00 am. The carmel rolls are the best I’ve tasted. The staff is also friendly.

Buns In the Sun is a very cute name for a sandwich shop, but that’s the best thing about this mediocre place. If you like Subway then you will like Buns in the Sun. If you think Subway is a crappy fast food place then avoid this sandwich shop. I had the«funky chicken» sandwich on a whole wheat bun with coleslaw. I ate it, but it was a below average sandwich that felt like eating junk food. This place has food like a fast food chain, but isn’t, now that is really sad. The cashier was nice and did his job just fine, but if you want a GOOD sandwich this isn’t it.
