My family and I went camping over Halloween weekend. I have to say, we were so impressed by how clean the grounds were and how friendly the staff was! We really enjoyed our time there. It was full of fun things to do. We hiked, sat by the fire, played horseshoes, went to the pool. etc. Everyone seemed helpful and more than accommodating. One surprise was a little Halloween party that we got invited to. We could tell that there was a lot of love and work put into this little event and it was great. there was a raffle, cake walk, games, costume contest, etc. All in all, we had a great time and the place was very pretty!

We stayed in the timber cabins during a recent trip to Julian. Reading the previous reviews helped us know how to prepare and what to expect, so I hope to add to that for others trying to decide whether or not to stay here. First off, let me start with the specifics for the timber cabins. It was a huge relief to be able to stay in the desert with 3 generations, including 5 children ages 2 – 13, without having to worry about bathrooms, showers, cold beverages, charging our phones, cameras, etc. The weather was great, but when the wind did kick up a little, we enjoyed being snug in our cabins. We rented 2 of them because there were 8 of us and they sleep 4. The cabins we stayed in, Texas and Arizona, had a separate full? queen? bed with a closing door. There was an a/c unit as well as an electric fireplace heater in this room as well as the main room. The kitchenette had a Keurig(with a jug of water to use to protect it from the minerals in the desert tap water), a small dorm fridge that you need to turn on right when you get there, and a microwave. Off of the main room there was a separate shower room with locking door, a separate toilet with locking door, and a main room with 2 cots(bring your own bedding for these) and a TV that only plays DVDs, no reception for anything else(but they have DVDs for rent in the general store which is open from 9 – 5). There was a picnic table, a fire ring, and a BBQ grill outside. The shower worked great and I had plenty of hot water for my shower. My overall assessment of the cabin was that the mattress was not very comfortable, but everything else, all the creature comforts were there, and I was grateful over and over that we had chosen to upgrade to the cabins. Next, the campground itself. I have stayed at a few different RV «resorts» and most of them are barren dirt patches dotted with RVs side by side. This is NOT the case here. Stagecoach Trails is beautifully landscaped with young, growing trees and desert-scapes here and there. There are BBQ kitchen areas for groups, covered areas, recreation areas, a pool(which we didn’t try) and hiking. There are corrals for horses. The general store was in fact, extremely reasonable, as others have mentioned. And Michelle, the food manager, offered a variety of breakfast sandwiches made to order and other things as well. I was concerned that things were open only from 9 – 5, but we didn’t end up having any problems with our accommodations at all, so it wasn’t an issue. And I guess that Mike was on site if we had needed anything. As I mentioned before, we were in the area to enjoy the town of Julian and chose to stay here rather than in town. Stagecoach Trails is a good 25 minutes away from Julian, so if you want to be in the heart of town, this is not the place to stay. However, we were so glad that we did stay here as most everything in Julian proper shuts down pretty early. After we shut the town down, we would take a pie back to the campground and try to get there in time to enjoy a walk before dark(looking out for snakes), the desert sunset, a campfire, and apple pie. We even did a moonlight walk from cabin to cabin. The stars were phenomenal. The cabin was snug and tidy. It was everything we hoped and more. Wifi was available, but spotty and not super fast, so definitely do not come here planning to do your Unilocal reviews or pay bills on site. In fact, there is no cell reception and we had trouble texting each other and one of our 3 phones did not get any texts at all. There is a pay phone up front for emergencies. And it is worth mentioning again that the general store and grill were super reasonable and had a huge variety of supplies. If you are like us and researching your options in the area, I hope this helps.

2 stars for the facility itself. It was clean. For the most part, the staff was great with the exception of one, read on for that. My kids really enjoyed running around and rock hounding. I would go again under different circumstances and knowing what I know now. However, probably not. It was a bittersweet visit. I really wanted this to be our new escape. We love the cabin idea and the cabin was nice. We typically go to Dos Picos or William Heise for quick escapes. My job is hard to get a complete weekday away from, therefore essential that I stay connected to my electronic leashes. The only reason we went here on a weekday is that they advertised WiFi. I had plenty of signal, but could not get connected in the cabin. I wondered around a bit in the cold in the early AM trying to get into a few available hot spots and still nothing. The only solid signal I could get was in the store. This connection was extremely lousy and it took me close to 2 hours to do 30 minutes of work. Hate to make this a deal breaker, but in this scenario, it was. I also called and left a message trying to get a definition on what a «kitchenette» was. No one called back. We just wanted to know if we needed to bring our camp stove or own hot plate,. Finally discovered a picture of a Timber Cabin which showed a hot plate. Well, no hot plate. We brought food that could only be cooked on some sort of range. So it was sandwiches and cold cereal. Lastly, bringing our 2 kids, we grabbed a handful of DVDs to watch with them at night. The DVD player of course did not work(and yes we tried the disk both ways). I mentioned something the first morning and was told they would look into it. Left for the day came back and no one had looked into it. Went to the office shortly after 5(not realizing it was just after 5) and as I opened the unlocked door a gentlemen barks at me «we are closed!». I simply told him that our DVD player was not working and was given a response with an attitude. I am not sure what he said because I was blown away by the attitude, but it was along the lines of Okay, I will look into it. Well, once again, no one looked into it. I finally got it working late in the night I understand that we were not staying at a 5 star hotel. I also understand that we were in a very rural area. I may have been able to overlook the WiFi had it been a weekend visit. But the rest was really disappointing.

For those of you using your coupon for tent camping… read on… I agree with the other review there are ants(but we looked around for a site that didn’t have as many and we were fine). The guy at the front was nice enough to basically let us pick any site we wanted and offered to carry picnic tables or fire pits to whatever site we picked to tent camp. Also, the pool did have several wasps/bees so we didn’t bother which was a shame because it was 90+degrees!!! My boyfriend and I bought the Groupon for two nights to tent camp(we went in the end of June) but only stayed one night due to the fact it was extremely hot and so incredibly windy!!! I mean beyond windy so bad we were lucky we had the option to sleep in our van instead of the tent. It was blowing so terribly in wind. We also couldn’t start a fire to cook because of wind although we didn’t want to start a fire because it was so blaming hot there! The PLUS side: If you go to camp RENT A CABIN!!! Skip the tent camping in summer too blazing hot and windy! The cabins look like they may all have AC(ask ahead when you reserve) and it’s way too hot too tent camp we literally were the only people there with a tent and now I know why it’s too windy and too hot!! But, we did see people in RVs and most of the cabins look like they were occupied the only weird thing was we really didn’t see anyone walking around probably because of the heat and the really strong wind. We had to start our portable stove inside the van which is a big no-no but there was no other way we were going to get a fire started or start a portable stove with the wind. Everything is kept very clean here, very clean bathrooms and showers and there’s lots to do for kids volleyball court, basketball court, and the pool although they did have some bees around so my not be too safe. It also has a main center rec area where you can go and lounge with your friends. We didn’t go inside there though because it look like a lot of people were in there having a party. Bottom line is this RV resort looks like it’s a lot of fun when it isn’t so hot out and probably gets really crowded for those of you that bought the Groupon I say make sure you get a cabin and ask for AC or prepare be prepared it’s hot out there think it’s extremely windy ! Plus it’s about 12 mile very windy road from Julian to get to the resort so you’re not really going to want to go back-and-forth to Julian on that road. So stop in Julian before you head to the resort and stock up on Apple cider and apple donuts and of course Apple pie!

There were so many ants at the tent sites that there was no chance of getting away from them. And the pool had bees like you wouldn’t believe. I’m talking thousands… probably tens of thousands of bees. We bought two nights and only stayed one night because it was awful!
