Came here over te ultra snowy weekend of New Years Eve. Julian had been covered in 7″ of snow. The town was hustling and bustling with tourists and the smokehouse seemed like a warm place to get some food. The woman who works there is hysterical and so real. So are all of the other employee. They ran out of pizza for the day so I ordered the half chicken. She said they had two quarter chickens which were larger than usual so for the same price I got practically a whole chicken with two sides. Best barbecue chicken of my life. Their sauce is awesome. A little kick of heat, sweet, not too tangy… I tore into the hunk of meat like I chased it down myself. It was perfectly cooked. Charred skin, huge, tender, moist meat… oh my god. Their sides were traditional and straight forward– just how I like it with traditional BBQ. The rustic indoor area has wooden tables for seating. Will always come back here.

Went here the 2nd day 0f 2015… wasn’t too crowded, we had a party of 6 so we decided to come here. Five out of the six ordered the smoked pork sandwich, to say the least… I’ve had better! !! The pork was somewhat burnt, and very dry although for whatever reason all our buns were soggy. Not sure if they dip the meat in some sort of sauce, but it was not pleasant. We asked for additional buns. I got the mac and cheese, or shall I say garlic and cheese. My husband got the beans and sent them back requesting the mac only to toss it… The way we looked at it was fuel for our bodies for the day since everywhere else had lines. We paid $ 27 for 2 sandwiches, 2 sides and 1 soda. If it wasn’t for the fact that they were in Julian… This place would or should have closed long ago… I’ll never go back!!!

HORRIBLE FILTHYFLOORS, FILTHYTABLE, filthy rag given to me to clean my table. 42.00 for pulled pork meal and small pizza. Pizza burnt, food cold, tasted like cardboard. Rude waiter, incompetent manager.

This place is below average. It’s very small, so seating is extremely limited. I had a rack of ribs and it was very dry and rough, the edges were burnt to a crisp. My kids had the pulled pork and chicken and it was very dry. The Mac and cheese was old very dry.

I forget to read reviews unril i have already ordered. I am going to give a high rating. The sirloin sandwich was piled high with beef, as was the pulled pork sandwich. So high that it needed to be reduced before i could eat it. The bbq sauce was tasty and plentiful. The mashed potatoes and gravy were just the thing for a cold rainy day. It was pricey, but delicious.

Went 2 days before thanksgiving, so it was busy in the town. So the Parking was very fun. Getting pies, of course. 3 tables inside and 2 outside. Beef sirloin was bland, but with the bbq sauce was good. Baked beans were the best we had mac n cheese bland but cheesy Pizza had a good sauce, thin crust, was good Everyone was very nice, helped with all the ordering when we were not sure what to get. Bathrooms are a bit of a walk, and there was only 1

Save your bucks this place, well you can finish the rest. Reheated, covered in sauce to hide the taste of leftover pulled pork. I dont know how this place stays open. Never again.

I don’t understand how they pass the health department inspection, filthy place, they leave the meat with no refrigeration for hours, the«cook»? does not wash hands after smoking, not coming back after getting sick with their food, calling health department to see if they can do something about this place.

The ribs were extremely burnt. However the small amount of meat inside was good! The mac & cheese and BBQ beans were okay. Pizza: crust was extremely hard. Pulled-pork: very DRY and BLAND. At least the staff was friendly!

Staff were friendly, but the food was bad. The pulled pork and ribs had no flavor whatsoever. The BBQ chicken pizza is just bad pizza smothered in BBQ sauce. The potato salad was about the only thing I didn’t mind. On the bright side, the lines are short. :/

It was so bad! So so bad, we can only laugh. The guy at the counter was nice and it wound up being $ 13 for a cheese pizza with pineapple(reasonable for a freshly made pizza, in my opinion). But the actual food? Oh so bad. We walked in and it was awkwardly empty and quiet. Still, I’m pregnant and was starving, so I was hoping that pizza was a «safe» bet for not being familiar with an area. The pizza was nice and crisp. Oh, and stale as a rock… It was gooped with tomato sauce(not even real pizza sauce), and absolutely COVERED in a thick layer of cheese and garlic salt. The pineapple was canned, which didn’t really matter because the gross factor was way beyond canned fruit. I saw my husband crumble a piece of mold off his crust and gag and just laughed. It doesn’t even make sense that it’s that bad. Two stars for having a nice staff. It could be a really cool spot if the food were edible lol

I came up to Julian with some friends and we tried to ignore the low Unilocal score on this place. Never Ignore a low Unilocal score. I ordered a pulled pork sandwich and mac and cheese. For what we got it was way overpriced, the pork inside wasn’t that bad but the mac and sheese must have been sitting out for hours. It was bland and hard. Our friends got 2 slices of pizza. It looks EXACTLY like the pizza that comes from 7⁄11. Tastes just like it too. Hospitality was at a bare minimum… AVOIDTHISPLACE

Simply awful. I honestly can’t consider this to be food. The kitchen looked very sterile, and it should have been a red flag. What real barbecue place has a sterile kitchen? One that doesn’t do any real cooking?

For a place in Julian, not too shabby. We got quite a bit of food here, I would suggest steering away from the pulled pork, it’s a bit on the dry side… and just fyi, when they fill your drinks up, they don’t wait for the foam to dissipate so they can put more in, they just give it to you that way and only half my cup was full, so I was a bit disappointed about that. The pizza is pretty good though, I would recommend sticking with the pizza even though it’s called the smokehouse, which would seem more of a BBQ place. The lady working at the time was super friendly though, did try to help as much as she could though she couldn’t refill drinks if her life depended on it lol.

My husband was still hungry after the pie at Mom’s, but I wasn’t hungry. He was out to get lunch in Julian, some of the places in the area we’ve tried before and wasn’t that impressed so we figured we’d give this place a try. We walked in and there was no one eating, first red flag. The menus are on the counter and my husband ordered the bbq meal with mac and cheese and salad. We waited awhile since another family came in after us and got their food before us, not sure how that works. The cook was pulling salad from a box even though it says that all their ingredients are made fresh. We can see the cook in the back room just pulling salad out of the box and serving it. The mac and cheese is clearly from a can. While waiting for our food, another couple came in and my two year old was upset because we wouldn’t let her put anymore money into the gum ball machine that was there so she was whining. A couple that just came in gave my husband a look and he said«because this place is such a classy establishment that we need our kids to be quiet». They quickly turned around and took their food to eat outside. My husband’s meal arrived and he was disappointed with his sides, all clearly from cans and boxes. His bbq however, was decent he said. Also, the waiter accidentally gave his order to another person and she had already started eating it before we realized it so my husband had to wait extra long for his food. The waitress was nice and even offered my daughter a cookie but we said we didn’t want her having any sweets for the rest of the day since she already had pie. That was probably the highlight of our trip to this place, the nice waitress, otherwise, it’s 1 star.

So here is the deal, the meat is good and the service is great. The potato salad is out of a tub from smart and final and the BBQ sauce is generic Cattlemans out of the jug. That being said for BBQ up in the hills the servings are plentiful and worth the cost, with a little more home made touch they could easily bump up to 4 stars but most likely don’t have to since there was a line to the door.

Gross!!! Who are you people and why are you lying so bad??? The food was awful Sysco potato salad would have been an upgrade. Mac and Chz was drier than the desert. The meat was over done and under seasoned. The bean tasted burned. Maybe they should order a BBQ sauce from Sysco too! An enormous mistake never to be repeated.

I came here for lunch today and the lady who works here is a sweetheart, she was very kind and helpful. I felt very welcomed here and the customer service was great; but why the three stars? Well first off I just thought the food was eh, it’s okay. The lady told us that people told her that her BBQ is better than Phil’s BBQ… so she got my hopes up but it was shot down. We ordered the full rack of ribs, pulled pork, and the works pizza. The ribs weren’t that great, I thought the meat was very chewy. I was hoping that the meat would fall off the bone but it felt like I had to do work to get to the meat. Overall, the meat was just chewy and the flavors were bland. It didn’t have the«smokey» flavor that it claim to have. However, the pulled pork was delicious; I loved it and though it was fulfilling. The pizza was good too, it wasn’t greasy and very yummy. This place is great if you’re looking for a quick bite. They don’t have that many indoor seating so expect to eat outside if it gets busy.

Man what was I thinking? I should have used Unilocal to find a lunch spot during our last trip to Julian, but I did not. This place is small with about four picnic bench tables and a TV. You order your food from the counter and sit at one of the tables. The staff is very friendly, which is a big plus, but everything else is pretty average. My wife ordered the pulled pork sliders, and I ordered their chicken sliders. Each came with a side and we shared one small beverage. Cost was about $ 20.00. My chicken sliders were below average with the bun being closer to a potato role, and the BBQ sauce was cloyingly sweet. My wife’s pulled pork was more like thinly sliced pork and it was very fatty. Again the rolls and sauce did not work for her The Mac and cheese was probably the best item we ordered. Next time I will only use the monocle.
