Make sure you dedicate an hour or two when you visit Tachair because there are lots of books to be found in this book store. I’ve stopped by a couple of times now and I usually don’t leave empty handed. There is a huge selection of used books at prices that cannot be beat: $ 3 for a paperback and $ 5 for a hardcover. There is also a small section of new books as well. The owners are super friendly, and they really encourage community events in the shop such as art shows, book signings, and book club meetings. It is nice to have a space where fellow book lovers in the neighborhood can congregate! I also enjoy the tasty treats from Cocoa Bakery; definitely a nice touch. I think the only drawback that I can see with Tachair is that they seem to take in ALL donations of books, noticeably so in the«tech book» section. I wish they were a little more selective on taking in books like that, because mostly there is no need for old computer program books from the 90s. I think these old books take away shelving space for books that would be more relevant to someone; if you can’t see the label then it doesn’t exist right? As a avid bookworm, I’m happy that Tachair is a part of Jersey City! I hope they continue to do well in the neighborhood.

Fantastic little used & new book store. Tons of fun to browse the shelves for that rare find that you’ll love. My first time there, I found a copy of the original binding of the hobbit, the one passed down that I read as a kid. They stock the big hits in new books, as well — but they don’t have the space to have everything. Conveniently, they offset this with a very simple book ordering system, by which I mean you stop by or call and ask for a book, and they’ll make sure it’s in their next(daily) shipment for you to pick up. Far easier, faster, and more enjoyable an experience than having to order a book off amazon. And then there’s the staff. The people who run this place(you may recognize them from the book table at previous street markets, before they got this place) really care — about books and the matchless entertainment provided by them, and also about the community in which they work. You can stop in and just chat about what you’ve read recently, get recommendations, provide your own — and I’ll plug here that you can get a cup of coffee or a bakery treat right there at the counter while you do — and they know their books. I’ve had some fun introducing them to a couple new authors I love, as well. And then the community aspect! They use their space to host all sorts of activities. Poetry readings, children’s events, everything. We residents of the neighborhood really appreciate that. So whenever you finish what you’re reading now, stop in here for your next… and you’ll never want to leave.

It’s a beautiful sunny first day of Fall and I was wandering around the neighborhood looking for an excuse to enjoy the weather. I stopped in at Tachair Bookshoppe, a charming new space on Newark Avenue. First of all, the proprietors(daughter and mom) are lovely people — friendly, warm, and genuinely excited to be open in the neighborhood. I found myself enchanted by their kind spirit and generosity. They’ll be hosting events in their space, such as art exhibits and book signings, and I really hope that residents welcome them to their new home in our cute little ‘hood! Used paperbacks for $ 3, hardcovers for $ 5. Their books are in great condition and most could pass as new! They also accept donations of used books from their patrons. There’s baked goodies from Cocoa Bakery and an assortment of coffees and teas. Yum. I can see myself whiling away hours here with a good book! MUCH welcome addition to Newark Avenue. I’m totally excited about the new places that are starting to spring up in this nook of Downtown!

Independent businesses rule! When I walked in to this new bookshoppe I was immediately welcomed by the owners with a very friendly hello and a quick rundown on what was what on their shelves. There was a table of folks planning an event and sipping on beverages provided by shop. There are new and used books for sale, arranged by author and or genre. If you cant find what you’re looking for, just ask, I’m sure they’ll help you with a big smile.

We went in about 4 days after the place officially opened, so I anticipate coming back and revising this review. Tachair is a new bookstore/café on Newark Ave, I personally am very excited about it! Right now, it has mostly used books and only one shelf of new, but they are going to be increasing their new book section. Their selection is small now and it’s organized by genre(including plays!) and the prices are reasonable. You can also buy coffee and tea there, which I didn’t partake in, but is a lovely touch. I didn’t buy anything this time, but I definitely saw books that peaked my interest. I’m excited to go back and I hope this place flourishes.
