Here’s the thing — the food. The food is really really good. Some of the more authentic Mexican food I’ve had in the US. Their carnitas and barbacoa are both fantastic. The problem — it’s a very odd dining experience. I arrived with my husband and our two kids around 6 or so on a weeknight. The open sign was flashing in the window. Inside at a bar were teens in PJs doing homework or such and eventually a woman came out and asked us if we were dining in. We were. She showed us to a table and proceeded to tell us what was available. Not much, actually, but everything we wanted so no big deal. It was a pretty odd and uncomfortable dining experience. I was wildly grateful when another couple came in for dinner as it began to feel less weird being there. Initially it felt as if we were intruding. I don’t know what the deal with this place is. I want to go back — so bad, the food was so good — but I hesitate because, well, are they really open? I don’t know. This place has so much potential. I had one of the best burritos of my life here. I just really don’t know what to make of this place.

Authentic is the word for this establishment! Whether it’s atmosphere or the menu, it may be a little different than your normal Mexican chain restaurant, but it still is worth the try! The restaurant is run by a family, and the chef and father of the family came out to chat about his ingredients in his salsa verde(very good!). I believe it’s also a late night hangout with a band and tons of late night tacos. I had the enchilada verdes, and they were very good. With corn tortillas and some great fixings, I was pleased. My boyfriend had four tacos and was full on three — that’s a good sign they’re filling(he’s 6’2″). If you are the kind of person who likes chain restaurants for their consistency, I wouldn’t recommend it. But if you’re willing to chance your normal comforts for the real cooking, give it a try!

El Chapparal is a welcoming, unassuming, authentic mexican restaurant with delicious food. It is family own and run and you can tell that great care is put into the food. They even give you a homemade chocolate after the meal. adorable, and delightful place. we really enoyed it.
