The world’s *only* hair salon/​bookstore. I may have you at that sentence, but read on because there’s so much more. The epicenter of cool– not only in Jefferson, but, I daresay, all of East Texas– Beauty & the Book is a bijou, all packed with books, sparkling jewels, artwork, and tchochkes galore. It’s covered in leopard print and painted bright colors. Upon entering, you may feel like you’ve just entered Betsey Johnson’s playhouse, but you’ll quickly realize upon meeting her that owner Kathy Patrick is an iconic figure in her own right. She is the Pulpwood Queen, head sister of the modern day Ya-​Yas and this shop is her very own divine secret. Lucky for us, she’s more than willing to share it with us.
There’s writing on the walls and between the covers. Read them. Try on jewelry made by Kathy and local artisans. Admire framed portraits and candid shots of celebrities past and present along with group shots of the Queens being all glamorous and outrageous. Get your hair done. Leave feeling beautiful and inspired. Rinse, repeat…
