Jacksonville has its fair share of homeless residents [that number may have risen as of late due to the collapse of the American economy] and places like the Sulzbacher Center work hard to help keep these people healthy and off the streets. I have volunteered a few times at the Sulzbacher Center, serving food. There are about 330 men, women and children [ :(] who take shelter here every night. Families are given special dorm rooms and then there is a large hall where cots are pulled out every night for sleeping, and tables pulled out every day for dining. They have a really great program set up. They provide food to anyone who wants it and shows up. But if you are looking for a place to lay your head, you are required to get up bright and early and spend your day looking for work, ways to get your life back on track. They also have a lot of services in place to help people find work and housing, as well. Case managers are assigned to each individual who stays at the center to motivate them, help them stay on track and to point them in the right direction. The people at the Sulzbacher Center are some of the most compassionate, selfless people who devote their lives towards helping other people get their lives back. Especially in today’s world, this could not be of a greater importance. They are always welcoming volunteers and I highly recommend spending a few hours inside this place. You will learn a great deal… about the city and yourself.
