Awesome spot! The food is always good. The crab salad is delicious and the smoke turkey is outstanding!

I grew up in Alabama and the food here reminds me of back home… especially the sides. I haven’t had greens or potato salad like this in a long time. The BBQ is awesome. The pulled pork was cooked perfectly and the Jerk Turkey was the juiciest turkey I’ve ever had in my life.

Pretty tasty overall. I thought the ribs(3) were good and the sweetish sauce complimented it well. It was a bit bit spicy, actually so was the potato salad. I told him mild and I’m sure it was but there was definitely a kick! The greens on a bed of rice was on point and the cornbread was decent. All for $ 10.69 which isn’t a terrible deal. Only open on Saturdays and Sundays though.

If you’ve been searching for the real deal, BBQ that’ll make you want to slap your grandma it’s so good, look no further than Kings. The ribs were out of this world, and the chicken was amazing. Now, let’s talk about the sauce… It’s mustard based, which isn’t my favorite in general, but, this was just incredible! On top of all that, Mr. King is probably one of the nicest folks you will ever meet. It is only open Saturdays and Sundays, so if you’re reading this on one of those days, stop reading reviews, and just go there, already. Brace yourself for the deliciousness that you are about to receive(oh, the sides are wonderful, as well).

The short version: Believe the other reviews… Finally some ‘Q worthy of a Southerner here in Jax. The long version: I’ve been in Jax for 5 months now and honestly the barbeque here stinks. I’ve been to no less than 8 other joints around here and they all ranged from dog food to average-at-best. Any southerner(or even someone who takes pride with their grill) will tell you that if you don’t see a smoker out back, it’s not real barbeque. If there isn’t a smoker out back… that«smoke» you’re tasting on the meat came from a bottle… And unfortunately Jax is full of those places… or places with real smoke and poor meats… Folks down here don’t know the difference because this isn’t the South or Midwest — where Barbecue is king… pun intended… Mr. King is the real deal. Real smoke, real tender, real sides… and really awesome. I asked Mr. King(who is a genuinely nice man) to «fix me up» because I am a newbie… and he sure did… I’m not even a real fan of greens — but his were outstanding… I tried the ribs, smoked turkey, rice, greens, blackeyed peas, and the mac & cheese. Everything was outstanding. He’s only there Sat & Sun, but he’s absolutely worth the trip… I’m leaving Jax in a few short weeks but I will see the very friendly Mr. King every weekend until I am gone. One more thing… I am NOT a fan of mustard based BBQ sauces, so I got his on the side… Well, Mr. King should bottle it and just sell it… It has just enough zip and flavor that it’s as addictive as crack(from what I hear!)… It is out-bleeping-standing and the only mustard based sauce I have ever enjoyed… His meats are so tender and smoked so well that they don’t need any sauce… so get his sauce on the side, take it home, and put it on anything you can… Yep, that good.

Outstanding meat and sides. We made new friends waiting for the food to be ready at noon on a Saturday. When I’m back in Jacksonville I’ll load up again.

Now THIS is barbecue! I’d heard the hype but after disappointment after disappointment with the barbecue in town, I wasn’t so sure I believed it. But, as I pulled up to San Juan and Retaw, the aroma of smoked meat filled my car and I was already sold! Mr. King was lounging in his lawn chair and quickly got up to offer me a delicious helping of ribs, mac ‘n cheese and green beans. I was too late for the cornbread. When I opened the container, I knew this was going to be good! I mean, talk about ribs! These were authentic, fall-off-the-bone, finger-lickin’ good ribs! I was told that yesterday they also had pulled pork, ham, brisket and turkey. I’ve gotta get back there earlier another weekend to try the variety of sides. But, for now, I’ll label Mr. King as the King of Jax bbq!

Ok, here’s the deal. I got transferred here from up North and as usual whenever I go to a new city I turn off the GPS and just start driving. So, I am driving around and find myself on San Juan going south. I look to my left and I see a little shack with a smoker to the side in a field. Of course, I immediately turned around and stopped to check it out. When you see anyone who is doing barbeque and they are missing one front tooth and the other is gold=BBQ jackpot. The owner, Mr. King is the nicest guy you will meet. The ribs are perfectly smoked and seasoned. The sides are excellent-especially the macaroni and cheese and the potato salad. All his sides are perfectly seasoned and homemade. The guy behind me said that his wife makes him drive 60 miles roundtrip every Saturday to pick up an order. This place is probably one of Jacksonvilles best kept secrets. I am serious about barbequeing and I can tell you this is as good as my own. The smoke ring is on point and the ribs have just that right amount of chew. This is definitely worth the trip. Keep in mind he is only there on Saturday and Sunday. Enjoy.
