It’d be 5 stars if only we could’ve stayed with the same orthodontist the entire time. That said, my son was in braces an extra long time and when he emerged from JU’s care he had beautiful teeth. Dr. Setzer(of Setzer and Cochran) was impressed. He actually used that word, «impressed». We started with one Dr. and completed the process with another one. Both were good(although my son preferred the 2nd one because she was an attractive young woman). Both were thorough. They always had an Orthodontist check their work at every visit. There was a lead doctor who oversaw everything. Budgeting is important when you have three kids, but we didn’t want to sacrifice quality care for our son’s teeth either. Here at JU, we didn’t have to compromise. Our biggest struggle was making sure our son wore his retainer. That’s on him and not JU. It’s true that it is a teaching hospital but the students are already full fledged dentists with a mature work ethic. You won’t have a 21 year old tinkering around in your mouth. Now our third child is beginning the process of braces here at JU. We considered going the traditional route and going with a private orthodontist; however, after weighing the cost and the results, we didn’t see the need to do that. Hopefully I won’t have to cross my fingers that JU can work their magic with our daughter too. I fully anticipate that her teeth will be just as beautiful as our son’s.

I was a patient at JU Ortho several years ago when I was having surgery at Shands Hospital and needed braces before surgery. The orthodontist that was on the surgical team was also teaching at JU — hence no need to find my own orthodontist. It’s an interesting experience being a patient at an actual university. I had been in teaching hospitals before, so I was definitely comfortable, but it’s not for everyone. Due to my treatment plan, my first doctor graduated before my treatment was complete, but I loved getting to know the future orthodontia specialists. Since I have a primary dentist now, I don’t see myself going back to JU, but I would definitely recommend it. Especially to anyone with kids; they were great with kids.
