We have only had a chance to explore a small section of this cemetery, but look forward to seeing the rest. In the beginning of the cemetery(entering from Main Street), you are in the newer section, but if you keep driving, you will enter the older section which is very picturesque with gigantic oaks dripping spanish moss and palmetto bushes scattered around. This is a beautiful place to walk, jog or ride your bike in.

How exactly do the living review a city of the dead? Kindly(if you’re superstitious). Beneath the canopy of oaks dripping in moss and glossy magnolias shading the lanes, lay denizens of the past, pillars of a bygone era. The Cummer family is there. Buried here are mayors to penniless architects who rebuilt the city after the great fire that leveled Jacksonville(Klutho) and everyone in between. Why review a Cemetary? Because Evergreen is more than a repository of RIP, it hosts a pumpkin run and a Pilot Club event, Tales of Our City, that recreates the stories of Evergreen’s most interesting occupants. It’s a park where one can find peace not terror. We often glide through Evergreen on our bicycles, safe from motorists, looking for monuments or old graves or nothing at all. Beyond the railroad tracks, deeper into the cemetery is a newer part where Heritage Trees are planted and a little pond with a fountain that jets water towards the heavens. Before the advent of the National Park Systems, cemeteries were the parks of distant yesteryears. A place to honor your ancestors while simultaneously enjoying the world of the living. Evergreen cemetery is a pleasant detour off the S line bike trail that runs through this urban area.(Read a very thorough and good Unilocal review of the S Line urban Greenway by Unilocaler Jo El S). Five stars is for preservation, maintenance, and the association’s push to stay relevant to the community by hosting events within its hallowed grounds. Plus, it’s a lovely place to safely ride your bike on a weekend jaunt. Beautifully written article that perfectly describes Evergreen(even if it’s 8 years old). Really can’t top this story with my measly review.
