9.75 for 1 piece of fried grouper(to go) sitting in a puddle of grease. Fishy smelling and overdone. 2 marble sized hushpuppies and 2 very small sides of slaw and some unseasoned sad vegetables. Maybe a bad day but I wont be back.

Like another writer we have eaten here for years and travel from the Southside of town. We used to go there for the salad and shrimp since Mrs Moran owned it. I recommended it to a friend they said horrible service. We went back and they were right — service terrible or non existent — salad not the same, waitress disappears and everything comes out at once– no refills, etc. We probably won’t make that trek much longer.

This is not a chain restaurant. This is an Independent establishment, what we used to call a mom and pop restaurant. Like many restaurants they are understaffed but what staff they have there are exceptionally hard working and exceptionally great at what they do. The cook /owner is magnificent with steaks. This is comfort food whether it be steak, seafood, pasta or sandwiches at its finest. Because they are understaffed it can be a bit slow so don’t think this is fast food. Be patient and everything will be wonderful frankly I like the slow pace and can talk with my friends which is why I go out to begin with.

I’ve eaten at that location many times and never been disappointed BUT last night was horrible. My husband and myself got the famous house salad. It tasted like vinegar. My steak was salty, tough and not edible… as were the green beans. Service was none. We were never asked if there was something wrong with the salads or left entrees. I won’t go back.

Truly a sad experience… will never try nor give this place another chance. Seen customers next to us order steak and something else on the menu, waitress brings out other dish and does not tell one member of the couple that they were out of steak… AUCE Lobster is a joke! Previously cooked, and then refrozen then cooked again… Horrible

We stopped in today on a whim. The food was hands down in the top 2 of my favorite restaurants. The house salad is great. I ordered shrimp and scallops blackened with a house salad and veggies. Husband ordered chicken and dumplings with corn and green beans. Everything tasted like something you would eat at granny’s house on Sunday. Excellent seasoning and quality. The green beans are better than moms, the veggies cooked just right — not mush but crisp. If you want a great meal for minimal cost go to bubbas! Waitress was awesome!

Love me some Bubbas food is fresh. Today my server is Ashley. She’s very attentive to all my needs. Today I’m having the special chicken and dumplings. Yummmmmmmmm. Oh my goodness the chicken and dumplings were exactly like what my grandma made. I have not had any like this in 15 years. Yes I’m old… Im getting some to go for later…

First time here, wanted to try it out since friend had suggested it. I’m not impressed one bit… It is a cute little establishment. The Hostess greeted us was really sweet. Sat us down got us our drink, and complimentary cracker with dip, informed us who our waitress would be. ok so I got up to go wash my hands, then husband went to wash his hands. Bathroom is clean, that I can say. We both sat there wondering where our waitress and who our waitress was. a good 15 min went by.(only 2 tables had customers, and they already had their food and was about to check out). As we sat there waiting, I looked around on the floor and I find q-tip under the table where we were seated.(yes I took a picture of it, but will not post it, as it could of fallen out of someone’s purse.) Just the fact that it was not cleaned or swept along with the table next to us looked like they had party. The table was cleaned off and set for next customer to arrive. Although as we pulled up no large party with kids were present, so had to of been a while. Waitress finally arrived we ordered our meal… the food was good, but I could imagine the amount that was for the lunch menu as she has suggested us to order the dinner size. I guess the fried items you’d get more than if you were to order it broiled?. Any ways since we were sharing the waitress brought over a extra plate for me. Who ever did the dishes the night before certainly did not do a good job as it has crusted old food on it. I brought it to the waitress’s attention and she was sweet about exchanging the plate. Yes she saw the crusted plate. I do have to say the food had taste. Good job to the cook! As far as we know there were 3 working, one hostess, one rang the register and one waitress. IMO one of them could of cleaned up the floors/carpet of previous customers. But they were no where to be found. I doubt I’d go there again. I’ll make that extra drive to Trents.

In the mood for a great dinner? Head to this place. Skip over the frou frou pretty restaurants and seek something down country and local. Espect to see a few Ford pick up in the parking lot and some in line for the drive through. While coming up I notice a woman in a bright tie dye shirt smoking outside. Minutes after entering I notice that she’s our server. :-/I try not to breath in her stench as little as possible. She didn’t just smell like smoked — she smelled like an ashtray that was shared by Snoop Dogg(Lion)!’ We fumble over the menu. There was a lot of options. In addition, they offer salsa and chips or a fish spreed with crackers as a free starter. I thought that was nice until it was actually delivered to the table. Presentation was terrible. Small plate or crackers and sauce cup of fish/seafood spread that reminds me of Communion Sundays. We gave it a try and we both agreed we’d be fine if it was removed from the menu. It just tasted like cream cheese. No real flavoring to it? After ordering I decide to look around the place. A lot of boating/fishing items along the walls and throughout the bathroom. Just makes you feel like you should be on a dock. Bathroom gives me a county fair«fancy» port a potty vibe and about 20 degrees hotter then the restaurant but well kept. Only a hand full of tables and booths. But it’s cozy. The food in one word was amazing. There was a long wait. Thankfully there were tvs playing one of the preseason games as we waited. When the food came both our mouths dropped. My friend ordered the country steak and was in awe at all the food on his plate along with the sides. I ordered the stuffed flounder which was a signature dish. Can’t wait to try the rest. Everything was well prepared and made us understand the wait. When asked about dessert — I almost fainted. No way was there any room — but order anyway! Dessert was complimentary to the meal we just had. I was only able to get 2 spoons spoons of this folded peanut/chocolate mouse thing. But it was great. In a sea of chain restaurants, this local gem is head & shoulders above.

We try to go every Friday for their outstanding seafood and one of a kind House Salad! The food is always delicious and the staff is friendly. Prices are reasonable! I like going during the week to take advantage of their delicious steaks also. Great Food keep it up! The Map is not wrong Bubba’s is right next to Sonny’s BBQ between Hyde Park and San Juan. If you like their Salt and Pepper Shakers they are available from Bass Pro with many designs. Baked potatoes melt in your mouth, Stuffed fish with melted cheese and green onions is delicious and large portions also. I’ve Unilocaled this Restaurant before with photos of my meals but I don’t know where my reviews went… HIGHLYRECOMMEND!!!

Bubba’s wishes it was as good as Salty’s was. If you are wanting the same taste and service and good food as you used to get at Salty’s then you will be disappointed like we were. We were regulars when Salty’s owner /chef first owned«Denny Moran’s Steakhouse» which was in Cedar Hills area. When they moved to the current location they changed the name and added the seafood part of the menu. The wait staff and chefs were all the same, so the special steaks and salads and homemade sauces were sooo very good. Our first question to our waitress was«do you have the same house salad»? Which the answer was«Oh Yes». Well either the waitress didn’t really know what the Salty’s house salad was, or had been told to say that to keep the old timers like us from leaving. Because, she could not have been more wrong. Salty’s used to make the salad at your table, tossing together the veggies, and oils and seasonings, as much or as little as you like. Not now. They brought out bowls of iceberg lettuce with a teaspoon of bottled Italian seasoned dressing, a few slices of tomato and that was it. It needed lots of salt & pepper & just was a plain ordinary salad. Boohoo! The fish spread with crackers was tasty and went very fast while we waited to place our orders. The restaurant’s interior is much improved from the last time we were at Salty’s, but it was warm — the window air conditioner above our heads read«88» and was not running. We were in the cramped long table in the far corner. Not the best place. There was lots of empty tables. And, an empty parking lot and no one entering when we left. My husband’s steak was over cooked(but by my standards was hardly cooked at all :)) but he didn’t send it back, he was too hungry and we had waited an extra long time for our dinners. My daughter’s fish sandwich was huge! She enjoyed hers very much. My son’s hamburger was okay, nothing special. Mine and my mother’s shrimp dinners were over cooked and a little tough. Our sides were okay, I can’t really remember what I had. Our waitress refilled our drinks once. She was quick with the check, but slow to check us out. We will not be back. We will enjoy the seafood restaurants around our home and not venture away again. When you look up a restaurant on Unilocal and the only pictures are the ‘cute’ salt and pepper shakers, that is not a good sign. :)

Been to Bubba’s a couple of times now, always on a weekend. Have had the prime rib, and tonight the special was steak and shrimp for for $ 10.95, so I opted for that. The steak was a 6 – 8 oz sirloin, and was pretty darn good. The shrimp(7? 8?) were medium sized, and very good as well. I didn’t put anything on my steak except for a little pepper, and just a dallop of cocktail sauce on a couple of shrimp — no flavor masking or enhancement was needed. My dinner included two sides, so I had the salad with house dressing, and a baked potato. The potato was just sorta there, but the salad was VERY tasty; the dressing reminded me of the 1905 Salad from the Columbia restaurants in Tampa and St. Augustine. A vinegrette — there was lemon in it, and other flavors that I haven’t decoded yet. Server was friendly and attentive, and kept my drink filled. Bubba’s is a little out of the way for me, but then… most places are. A solid 3.5 stars(I round down), next trip I’ll focus on the seafood, and«sea» if another half-star is warranted.

Bubba’s replaced Salty’s. We’ve eaten there three times since the change and each time potential customers come inside to ask, «Do you still have the salad? And the prime rib?»(Yes, and yes; then they sit down and have dinner.) A seafood and steak restaurant where the storied items are neither seafood nor steak may lead you to believe the surf and turf are unremarkable, but that would be a mistake. In Catholic tradition, we refrain from meat on Friday’s. It’s supposed to be a form of self-denial, but going to Bubba’s makes it a guilty pleasure. Bubba’s may have a new name, but that location has a long history in the community. The salad alone is worth a trip to Bubba’s; unique, made to order, and so flavorful. Old-school seafood restaurants in Jax have a tradition of offering crackers and crab, shrimp, or fish-flavored cheese spread. Bubba’s is no exception and Bubba’s cheese spread, while good, seems indistinguishable from others. For entrees so far I’ve tried the Seafood Louis, Seafood Melody –both pasta dishes with fabulous presentations, just the right texture of pasta, and a generous endowment of tasty bits of seafood– and the AYCE fried fish and shrimp. The fried fish was good, not spectacular but really good. The shrimp were tasty with just the right consistency(growing up a fisherman’s son I’ve learned that preparing shrimp is an art). The sides were fresh and tasty as well. Some day we have to go back on a weekend and try the prime rib. Bubba’s has limited seating, but the food is worth the wait. Experienced servers provide very good service. The ambiance is classic coastal seafood restaurant, except that little(freshwater) bass figurines hold the salt and pepper shakers — that is so cute. If you enjoyed Salty’s you’ll enjoy Bubba’s. If you never experienced Salty’s, you really need to visit Bubba’s. It’s a ‘can’t miss’ seafood feast.
