The haircut was fine and the barbers are friendly, but they charged 21 plus tip! I just moved from San Fran and I was paying 15 there. Will definitely look for a cheaper haircut.

I’m always unsure moving to a new area about the available barbers. During my first run in the Iowa City area, I tried Hawkeye Barber with mixed success. Otherwise, I would wait until I went home for a visit so I could see the woman I’d been going to before I moved. In Chicago, I tried at least three places before Christian(the Angry Barber) became my go-to. I’m soon leaving Iowa again, but during my entire year here, Stan’s has been the man… well, there are two men; two barbers; two men barbers… you know what I mean. Stan’s is an old-fashioned barbershop: You have sports on the radio(if Iowa is playing anywhere in any sport, pretty much), the guys will talk sports with no problem, you can read a gentleman’s magazine while you wait, and the place itself is simple and small without unnecessary frills. I think it is cash only, but I’m not entirely sure. During three of my visits, Stan cut my hair. Stan is a quieter fellow both in volume and amount of conversation. I am, too, so I appreciate his laid-back demeanor. He always did a great job with the minimal direction I was ever able to give. I’m not a difficult client – I basically just ask for my hair to be shorter – and Stand was always able to oblige. As the bonus I have become so accustomed to, he would finish the cut with the warm foam back-of-the-neck straight razor shave. I love that. I also appreciated that during my bearded days(and months), Stan always offered to give the beard any work but never pushed it or «accidentally» trimmed any part of it without my say so. Tom cut my hair today, in my final visit. He is much more talkative; start any subject, and he could keep going for hours. If you prefer more of a good talk with your barber while you get your cut, he’s your man. Tom also did as great of a job as Stan. I started getting worried when hair just kept coming off my head. But the final product did not disappoint. Tom even explained parts of the cut as he went along, teaching me details of cutting hair about which I never knew. It’s an art form, folks. Oh, we also talked about the art street fair and the necessity of a nice lawn before purchasing a several-thousand-dollar, hand-crafted, lawn ornament. It can’t be the pinnacle piece on a crappy lawn, folks, it just can’t be. If I were staying longer in Iowa, I’d be heading back to Stan’s for any more haircuts. The gents know what they’re doing, and they’re great Iowa guys, too. Thanks for the great cuts, guys!

Tom cut my hair. He is a great guy who will try to please you with his work. He didn’t know what a ‘fohawk’ was so I had to explain it to him. This is an old fashioned barbershop with a small waiting area. Only two guys work there and it’s by appointment only. A haircut is $ 21 or $ 26 with a wash.

I have been going here since I was young. Have always gotten a very good haircut here and have never had a problem with anything Stan and Tom has done. These two are old school barbers who aren’t afraid of using a straight razor to make sure you are cut right. Well worth the money spent.
