I’ve been to Michael Tschantz’s three times since moving to Iowa City seven months ago. I’ve always enjoyed my time in the salon and ALWAYS enjoyed how great my hair looks when I leave. It has always been easy to schedule appointments, too.
As a guy, it can be difficult to find someone that has a good idea of current «hip» hairstyles/​trends for men. Lindsay, at Michael Tschantz’s, always knows what I’m going for and is consistent in her ability to achieve whichever style I desire. Not only that, she’s always willing to offer suggestions. After all, sometimes I don’t even know what I want to do with my hair. I was so pleased this last time I went that it prompted me to write this review!
The price is the only (slightly) sore spot — but, you get what you pay for.

Horrible. I went to Michael (the owner) one time and will never go back. He colored my hair and it was the worst color I have ever had. I’ve gone to stylists just out of hair school and they have shown more skill, intuition and talent. He tried to fix my hair after the color went bad. I was nervous at this point and I should’ve left but stayed to let him try (not a good idea). To top it off he actually still charged me for the color. I had to go elsewhere to have the color fixed but the health of my hair has suffered and can’t be undone. Very costly, both monetarily and emotionally! Save yourself the nightmare and go somewhere else. I would not recommend.

If you’re an older man or lady looking for a simple trim, this is the place for you. If you’re a young person trying to get a current look, I wouldn’t go here. I went in looking for a change and came out with my hair looking nearly the same, and actually, worse in the sense that the highlights that were applied don’t really line up and look patchy and kind of awful. I wanted to save some money as I’ve been to some of the more upscale and pricey salons in town, but I should have known that you get what you pay for.

One of the trickiest things about moving to a new city is finding someone you can trust to take care of your hair.
When I moved to Iowa City from L.A. a few years ago I was faced with this daunting task. And, not to be a complainer, but it is extra daunting for me because I have a ridiculous hairline (and cowlicks) that that naturally grows into a mullet. Literally, each week after an amateur cuts my hair I lose a few perceived IQ points based on how my hair grows out.
Lucky for me someone I trust (who has nice hair) recommended Michael Tschantz salon to me and I found not only one stylist that I can trust, but I found an entire salon full of them! To be clear, I generally see Katie J. or Mike and they both do a fantastic job on my hair, but since I tend to procrastinate when making appointments I’ve ended up at one time or another seeing pretty much everyone there, and they have all been able to tame my not-​so-​simple hairline.
The salon is in Iowa City, so depending on where you live it might be a bit out of the way (I’m looking at you, Coralville) but, trust me, it is well worth 10 minutes in the car to have consistently awesome hair. Not to mention the fact that the best Mexican food in town is close by (La Michoacana), which is a big bonus.
My wife also goes to Michael Tschantz and she gets the whole 9 yards, cut, color, and etc. and I swear her hair looks better than it did when she paid twice as much in L.A. before we moved.

Great staff, comfortable environment, reasonably priced; finally can have my hair cut in Iowa City instead of heading back home to the Chicagoland area.

michael tschantz salon is absolutely the best in iowa city. he is an award-​winning stylist who operates one of the most established salons in the iowa city area. i have been going to him for a few years and have never been disappointed. despite the fact that there is sometimes a wait in order to get an appointment with him, it is worth it and if you can’t get into him, his other stylists are also excellent. the prices are comparable to other salons but the service far exceeds others. highly recommend!

I have been getting my hair cut by Michael for almost 2 years. My first appointment, a (now former) receptionist made a scheduling error. Michael stayed late on a Saturday to give me my haircut, yet I didn’t feel like he was annoyed or trying to rush through my service to get me out of the salon. He starts by talking through what you’d like for your cut and discussing the plan. You then will get a relaxing shampoo and head rub. Back to the chair to allow Michael to work his magic. He will dry and style your hair when finished, so you don’t walk out with wet hair, like some places do. My cuts have always been done very well, and allow me to wait longer between haircuts. I have had strangers compliment me on my haircut, which is recognizable as being cut very well, despite it being a simple cut. The atmosphere is clean and inviting, has a relaxing waiting area, and lots of great products for purchase, if you desire (Aveda, etc.) I also really like that Michael does not push product — he’ll make recommendations only if you ask for them. Overall, I’ve never in my life had a better experience at a salon, even though I’ve lived in 6 different cities, including Houston & Los Angeles.

I too moved from Iowa City for Chicago about a year ago and have struggled to find a place that I like as much as Michael Tschantz! I always try to schedule a hair appt. when I’m back in Iowa City, because nothing else compares.
The staff at Michael Tschantz is incredible! They are always extremely welcoming and easy to talk to. From the minute you walk in the door, they ask you if you need a tea, coffee, wine, etc.
All the stylist that I do a great job at what they do! There isn’t anywhere else in Iowa City I would trust as much as this crew. They are really on top of the new trends. I’ve gone in before wanting a complete change from the usual haircut and trust them to do whatever they think and it ended up looking great!
I will agree, I wish they were a little more centrally located, I LOVED their old location downtown (before the tornado) and always was hoping they would end up back in the area.
I do and will always recommend Michael Tschantz to anyone in the Iowa City area!

Unfortunately, I recently had to leave Iowa City for the east coast — and I’ve been really struggling to find a replacement! Over about 9 years, I could depend on the stylists (including Michael himself) to give me excellent service that included cuts and color. Services are not inexpensive, although it varies by stylist. At the same time, you are getting value for your money!
Everyone is friendly, welcoming, and skilled. Your stylist does your shampoo. I was nervous that they might struggle after they moved following the 2006 tornado, but it looks like things have worked out. It used to be nice to be able to walk there from work on campus, but at least now it’s easier to park!
Unfortunately, I can’t justify round-​trip flight tickets for every haircut, but I might actually plan a trip to Iowa City if I go for color again… Miss you all!
