Inver Hills Community College

Went to inver hills from 2008 til 2012, received my associates degree and moved on to get my bachelors degree. I enjoyed my time at inver and i actually liked most of the instructors. One in particular was Dave Berger, he was one of the most inspiring professors i have ever had the pleasure of meeting. To this day i still keep in touch with him. With that being said i have recently learned that Dave has been placed on indefinite paid leave for standing up to a corrupt president, who has been abusing funds and failing to do his job. Before this new i would have recruited anyone i knew to inver hills, but if this is the type of leadership that they have placed in charge i can no longer and will no longer recommend what was once a great institution. I urge anyone reading this, if you or your child is thinking about attending this college, don’t, look elsewhere. Spend your money on another college that will treat the instructor better and manage your childs future with the care and consideration they deserve.

Not impressed with the school whatsoever. A few of my classes are tolerable, however most have professors that just give out assignments for busy work and don’t give any feedback for the grades they give. Also, the bookstore is IMPOSSIBLE!!! I have been having issues with them since day 1 and still am having issues. They will not reply to any emails or respond to voicemails. I have had an issue with them sending me the wrong book and after trying to communicate via phone and email and leaving four unanswered voicemails, I finally had to resort to Amazon. I now have a $ 120 book that I have no use for and am now spending almost $ 100 more of my own cash because of a mistake that they made and are refusing to fess up to and correct. After talking to a few other students, I am not the only one that has had issues with them. This school is unprofessional and there are problems every which way. If you are looking for a good college experience, look elsewhere because I have experienced nothing but problems with Inver Hills.

I adore this college. I’m doing the Paramedicine program, and all they’ve been is good to me. The instructors said that we have one of the most well-​known and recognized paramedic programs in the country. THAT is awesome. Inver Hills is also my employer; I thoroughly enjoy my job. I help oversee the Peer Tutors in the office. We have an excellent Tutoring program here — extremely knowledgable tutors.

I attended this school in 2010 and I’m still having problems with them. I enjoyed a few classes and the teachers were great although the teachers I needed help from most sent me away to a tutor. That is no big deal but my tutor was more interested in me then helping me get good grades so because of my dilemma I failed to get a nice grade. When I resigned up for this same class I felt like I didn’t have support I needed so I cancelled later than the cancellation date and I still was charged for this class, which was obviously way more than I have being that I am not a graduated student, moreover they just took my money right out of my account. I am a single mom and I feel like they should have been more supportive and when I explained my issues I felt like I was judged rather than helped with a solution. I did however go to Rasmussen and they went above and beyond for me.

I have gone to this school before and am starting again for one last semester in august. they’re very nice helpful people and it is a great stepping stone towards a 4 year university or a certificate. Tuition is not too expensive for residents and the facilities I have seen are pretty nice. I recommend it for getting your generals out of the way so you save some money. your credits will most likely transfer to any accredited MN school. they transfer to the university of Minnesota I know that for a fact.

First the good…
I earned my bachelor’s degree via a distance learning program that fit into my full-​time work schedule. After moving to Minneapolis, and being temporarily unemployed, I started looking for a college that offered a paralegal program with a reputable program and flexible night classes. Inver Hills had it.
The paralegal program is taught by practicing attorneys, public defenders, etc. I feel like I am getting real-​life experience and these instructors know their stuff!
The campus is conveniently located, easy to navigate and the people working there are helpful and easily accessible. Besides the flexible schedule and easy certificate requirements (for paralegal), they are CHEAP. But, you get what you pay for, which leads me to the critique…
I’ve worked with many corporate and private attorneys in my career and none of them were deliberately vague, inconsistent or careless. If you are working in a law firm or a corporation an attorney knows they are the ones ultimately liable if something goes wrong as the result of their lack of instruction, in this college setting however, some instructors grade on a whim because it’s only the student’s grade that suffers.
Some instructors thrive on «gotcha» teaching, casually mentioning something in class then later severely deducting points by saying, «I said so…» Sometimes it was said, sometimes it wasn’t (I think they get confused as to what they say from one class to the next). And it doesn’t matter if every student backs you up that a particular instruction was never given.
Some instructors don’t grade thoroughly or consistently. Half a class might have points deducted for using proper punctuation simply because the instructor personally doesn’t like it, regardless of MLA or Strunk & White standards. Be prepared to find the other half of students had the same issue over-​looked. I chose to go to school to learn and be INSTRUCTED and not to have instructors play mind games with me.
Finally, be careful if you are using financial aid, they are extremely disorganized. I was using financial aid when I was informed I was going to be dropped because of a balance from the previous semester. Waiting 6+ months to tell me my financial aid for that year had run out is beyond ridiculous. Telling me 2 days into the next semester? How can you take an institution seriously? Then I was told because I qualified for financial aid for the current year I could use the refund amount to pay off the previous semester and that I wouldn’t be dropped from classes. By the end of the week, guess what happened? Yup, dropped. I also wasn’t notified of that, I had to figure it out on my own. But they did give me a 12-​hour window to pay the balance and get re-​enrolled. So generous. I can’t decide if I want to re-​enroll or if I’ve been jerked around enough by this school and finish this certificate elsewhere. Ugh… they’re just so CHEAP.
